Quick answer: ChatGPT and other AI platforms are, today, almost entirely a research-and-awareness channel — people ask them to summarise or shortlist options before ever visiting a website. Organic visibility (being cited in AI answers) compounds with your existing SEO work at near-zero extra cost. Paid ChatGPT Ads exist and are real, but as of August 2026 they are not self-serve available to India-based advertisers, and early results suggest the format still suits consumer research more than mature B2B campaigns.

If you've already read our AI search guide, you know how citation, structured data and query fan-out work under the hood. This page is a different layer entirely. It doesn't re-explain the mechanics — it asks the question that sits above them: as a marketer building a channel mix, should ChatGPT and AI platforms get budget or attention at all right now, and how do they fit next to Instagram, Google and everything else in your plan? That's the gap this page fills inside our broader marketing channels guide, and it's the one genuinely new fact this page adds that the technical AI-search cluster doesn't cover: OpenAI has actually launched paid advertising inside ChatGPT.

What This Channel Actually Is Right Now

Research-stageNot direct-responseNo retargeting

Treat ChatGPT and similar AI platforms as a top-of-funnel research and comparison layer, not a direct-response channel. Someone typing "best CRM for a 10-person team" into ChatGPT is doing the same job a Google search used to do alone — except an AI model now does the comparing and summarising before the person ever clicks through to a website.

  • Not yet a reliable direct-conversion channel. You can't run a bottom-funnel "buy now" campaign here with Google/Meta-level maturity — the attribution and conversion tracking infrastructure isn't there yet.
  • Not a retargeting channel at all. There's no way today to show an ad to someone who previously visited your site inside a ChatGPT conversation.

What it is good for: being the brand that gets recommended when an AI assistant does the shortlisting, and — for a narrow, currently few-markets-only slice of advertisers — a genuinely new paid placement inside that research moment. Both are covered below.

The Organic Side: Being Cited, Not Just Ranked

Compounds with SEONear-zero extra costEarly-mover advantage

The technical playbook for getting cited by AI models — structured data, entity clarity, being the kind of source these models trust and quote — already lives in our AI search guide, and we're not going to re-explain it here. If you want the how-to, start with LLM visibility, structured data for AI, and brand mentions.

What that cluster doesn't cover — because it's a channel-strategy question, not a technical one — is why this belongs in your channel decision at all. Two reasons:

  • It's crowded now, but it won't stay this open. AI answer surfaces are still relatively uncrowded compared to a Google results page stacked with a decade of competing content. Being one of the first well-structured, citable sources in your category compounds an advantage the way early SEO investment did in the 2010s.
  • It doesn't require a separate content programme. The same well-sourced, clearly structured, direct-answer content that ranks on Google is what AI models cite. If you're already investing in SEO and content, organic AI visibility is close to incremental value on top of work you're already doing — not a new budget line.

This is the practical reason organic should almost always come before paid on this channel: there's no point buying a placement inside an AI conversation if your brand isn't also the kind of source that conversation would organically recommend.

The Paid Side: ChatGPT Ads, Explained Honestly

1 ad formatFree/Go tier onlyNot yet in India

This is the part of the channel that's genuinely new since the AI-search cluster was built, and it's real: OpenAI has launched an actual advertising programme inside ChatGPT, not a pilot rumour. Here's what it is, accurately, based on OpenAI's own documentation and industry testing through mid-2026.

What the ad format looks like

There's one documented ad type: a sponsored card, clearly labelled and visually separated from ChatGPT's normal conversational response — for example, a product recommendation card showing a price alongside a regular answer. OpenAI's own spec (sometimes called a "chat_card") allows a headline of 3–50 characters, a description up to 100 characters, an image, a favicon and a link. It is not a blended-in placement — it reads as an ad.

Where it's available — and where it isn't yet

ChatGPT Ads started as a US test in February 2026 and expanded through the year to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea, with self-serve Ads Manager also live in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. From 24 August 2026, 31 European countries gained partner-led access, with self-serve access said to follow later.

India is not on that list. As of the most recent information available, an India-based business cannot self-serve buy ChatGPT ads today. We're stating that plainly because this is an India-focused agency and we'd rather name the honest limitation than oversell a channel you can't yet access. This could change as OpenAI keeps expanding the country list, but plan around today's reality.

Targeting — and its real limits

OpenAI matches ads to the topic of the conversation and to a user's past chats and ad interactions, without sharing conversation details with advertisers. Advertisers can set: geography (country-level everywhere, more granular inside the US), custom audiences from uploaded email/phone lists (25,000-matched-user minimum), platform (iOS, Android or web), and broad "context hints" — but not demographic targeting, lookalike audiences, or retargeting, a real limitation compared with Meta and Google Ads, where those tools are the backbone of most efficient campaigns.

How campaigns are bought

Three campaign objectives are available. The auction itself is relevance-weighted and second-price, similar in structure to how Google and Meta run their own auctions.

01 CPM

Billed per thousand impressions — built for reach.

02 CPC

Billed per click — built for traffic.

03 oCPC

Billed per click while the system optimises delivery toward a defined conversion event.

Where ads do — and don't — appear

Ads do not show to paying ChatGPT users on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education tiers — only Free and Go tier users see them. Ads are also excluded for under-18 accounts, and excluded near sensitive topics such as health, mental health and politics. OpenAI also offers a first-party tracking pixel (the OAIQ SDK) and a server-side Conversions API for measurement — conceptually similar to the Meta Pixel and Conversions API most performance marketers already know.

Early performance — honestly framed

Early tests through mid-2026 found click-through rates in a rough 0.65%–1.30% range in some B2B tests, with CPC bids often clearing around $4–5. One agency's test produced modest impressions and clicks but no completed leads. Read that as directional, not a benchmark to plan a budget around. The honest framing: this channel currently looks better suited to consumer research and comparison-shopping scenarios than to mature B2B lead generation — partly because the format lacks demographic and lookalike targeting, and partly because it only reaches free-tier users, who skew less professional/B2B than the paying tiers that are excluded entirely.

Organic vs Paid: The Practical Comparison

Put side by side, the two sides of this channel behave very differently — and stack up very differently against the paid channels you already run.

Organic, by contrast, isn't a separate cost centre at all. Being cited or recommended in an AI answer compounds with the SEO and content investment you're already making, and it has no direct media cost. Paid ChatGPT Ads are the opposite: a new, narrow channel, not yet available to India-based advertisers to self-serve, reaching only free-tier users, without the demographic controls most performance marketers rely on — and early results suggest it isn't yet a mature channel for most businesses.

Who Should Invest Here Now

Organic: almost anyone already investing in content or SEO. If you're producing clear, well-structured, well-sourced content for Google, extending that discipline to be AI-citable is close to free incremental value — see the AI search guide for how to structure it.

Paid: realistically, only businesses with an operating presence and ad accounts in the countries where ChatGPT Ads is actually live — the US, UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and (via partners) the 31 European markets added in August 2026. India isn't on that list yet. Even where it is available, the format is currently better suited to consumer or comparison-shopping scenarios than to serious B2B lead generation, given the missing demographic and lookalike targeting.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Organic example: a business optimises its comparison or pricing pages to be clearly citable — direct, unambiguous answers to "how much does X cost" or "how does X compare to Y", clean structured data, no dark patterns hiding the actual price or terms — so an AI assistant summarising the category can accurately represent the offer instead of skipping it or getting it wrong.

Paid example: in a market where ChatGPT Ads is live — say a US or UK ecommerce brand — a small test campaign is built around a comparison-shopping conversation (someone asking ChatGPT to compare products in a category), using a sponsored card with a clear price and a link, measured through the OAIQ pixel. We're describing this generically as a pattern, not a real campaign we've run — Digital Hangover has not executed ChatGPT Ads campaigns, since the format isn't available to India-based advertisers yet. What we can do is help you evaluate and prepare for this channel as it opens up.

Metrics You Can Actually Track

Organic: brand mention frequency in AI answers — honestly, manual spot-checking by running your own prompts is currently the realistic way to track this; no site claims a mature automated tool for it yet. Also watch referral traffic tagged from AI platforms in GA4 where it's detectable, and your relative "position" in comparison-style answers when you test prompts yourself over time.

Paid: the standard discipline — CPC, CTR and conversion rate from the OAIQ pixel and Conversions API, treated with the same rigour you'd apply to any other paid channel. Given the early-stage performance data above, run any test with a small, bounded budget and clear stop criteria rather than committing spend on the assumption of Google/Meta-level efficiency.

When to Skip This For Now

  • No existing content or SEO foundation. If you have nothing worth citing yet, there's nothing an AI model can recommend you for. Fix that first — see our AI search guide and general SEO work — before treating AI-platform visibility as a priority.
  • India-only, evaluating paid specifically. ChatGPT Ads self-serve access isn't available to India-based advertisers as of now. Don't plan a budget around it until that changes.
  • You need precise demographic or lookalike targeting to be efficient. ChatGPT Ads doesn't offer either. If your model depends on it, this isn't the channel yet.
  • You need fast, provable ROI this quarter. Both the organic and paid sides of this channel are early and unproven relative to Google and Meta. Treat this as a forward-looking investment, not a quarter-end performance lever.

How It Works With Your Other Channels

Organic AI visibility is fundamentally downstream of your existing SEO and content work — not a separate content programme you run in parallel. The same well-structured, well-sourced content that ranks on Google is what gets cited by AI models. It sits early in the funnel, often before someone ever runs a Google search or sees a paid ad, which is exactly why measuring it in isolation is hard — the same attribution-difficulty point that applies to awareness channels generally in our marketing channels guide. Don't expect a clean last-click number here; expect it to quietly support everything downstream of it.

Key takeaways: Treat AI platforms as a research-stage awareness layer today, not a conversion channel. Organic visibility compounds with SEO you're already doing — start there, and use our AI search guide for the technical how-to. ChatGPT Ads are real and worth knowing about, but not yet self-serve available in India, and early results suit consumer research more than mature B2B. Revisit this channel's paid side as country availability expands.

Frequently asked questions

Is marketing on ChatGPT the same as AI search optimisation?

No, but they're closely related. AI search optimisation — covered in depth in our AI search guide — is the technical work of getting your content cited and trusted by AI models across the web. Marketing on ChatGPT and AI platforms, as covered on this page, is the channel-strategy question sitting above that: whether and how to invest time or budget here at all, including the newer paid advertising option OpenAI has launched inside ChatGPT itself.

Can Indian businesses run ChatGPT Ads right now?

Not through self-serve access, as of the most recent information available. OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads programme has expanded through 2026 to the US, UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and — via partners, from 24 August 2026 — 31 European countries. India is not currently on that list. This could change as OpenAI continues expanding the programme, but it isn't accessible to India-based advertisers today.

What does a ChatGPT ad actually look like?

Currently, one documented format: a sponsored card that's clearly labelled and visually separated from ChatGPT's regular conversational response — for example, a product recommendation with a price shown alongside an answer. It includes a short headline, a brief description, an image, a favicon and a link, and it does not appear blended into ChatGPT's normal responses.

Should I focus on organic AI visibility or paid ChatGPT ads first?

Organic, in almost every case. It compounds with SEO and content work you're likely already doing, has no direct media cost, and — unlike paid — is accessible regardless of where your business is based. Paid ChatGPT Ads are a narrower, newer option currently limited to advertisers in a handful of countries that don't yet include India, with targeting limits and early performance data that suggest caution rather than urgency.

How do I measure whether AI platforms are sending me business?

Honestly, imperfectly. For organic visibility, the realistic method today is manually spot-checking how your brand appears when you run relevant prompts yourself, plus watching AI-platform referral traffic in GA4 where it's detectable. For paid ChatGPT ads where available, OpenAI's OAIQ pixel and Conversions API provide standard CPC, CTR and conversion tracking similar to what you'd use on Meta or Google.
