Spotify Ads in India: Formats, Targeting and Limits

Audio is the one channel nobody can skip and nobody can scroll past — and the one where nobody is looking at the screen. That contradiction decides your creative, your targeting and, most of all, how you are allowed to judge the results.

Quick answer: Spotify ads are audio, video and display placements sold through Spotify Ads Manager, which is now open to Indian advertisers on a self-serve basis. Audio is the core format: 30 seconds, one clickthrough, mostly heard with the screen off. Buy it for reach and recall — never on last-click attribution.
WHY AUDIO BREAKS LAST-CLICK Nobody is looking at the screen — so nobody clicks Ad plays 30 seconds, unskippable Listener hears it hands busy, screen dark Buys later, elsewhere searches your brand by name WHAT YOUR ATTRIBUTION RECORDS Zero clicks. Zero assisted conversions. A channel that looks like it did nothing — and a direct or branded-search visit that gets the credit instead. Audio is bought for reach and recall, measured with brand lift or a holdout test, never last-click. If last-click is your only measurement, do not buy audio — you will switch it off too early.

How an audio ad that worked shows up in your reporting as an audio ad that did nothing.

Here is the part most media plans get wrong before they start.

A Spotify audio ad has no click for the majority of the people who hear it. Their phone is in a pocket, in a bag, plugged into a car. The ad plays in full because there is no skip button, and then the music comes back.

So if your measurement model is last-click, you will run Spotify, see a handful of clicks against a five-figure spend, and conclude that audio does not work. You will conclude that every single time, no matter how good the ad was. That is not a finding about Spotify. It is a finding about your attribution model. Audio sits in the awareness and recall layer of a channel mix — the same layer we map out in our guide to marketing channels — and if you have no way to value that layer, this is not your channel yet.

With that said plainly, here is what buying it in India actually involves.

Can you actually buy Spotify ads in India?

Yes — self-serve. Spotify's India advertising site at ads.spotify.com/en-IN presents Spotify Ads Manager as the buying platform, with audio, video and podcast ads listed as the headline formats. Note the product name: the old Spotify Ad Studio branding has been folded into Ads Manager, so search results still using "Ad Studio" are describing the same thing under a retired name.

Self-serve access for Indian advertisers opened in April 2026, per trade coverage of the India launch, which put the platform in reach of startups, D2C brands and mid-sized companies rather than only agency-led enterprise buyers. Practically, that means you do not need a sales conversation to start — though for large custom placements you will still end up in one.

On minimum spend, be careful what you read. Spotify's Ads Manager help documentation states a campaign minimum of "250.00 in your local currency" without naming markets, and there is no India-specific rupee figure published on Spotify's own India pages today. Treat the floor as something to confirm inside the account at setup, not something to quote in a plan.

Self-serve: yes Product: Spotify Ads Manager "Ad Studio" = retired name

The formats Spotify actually sells

Spotify's India ad-experiences page lists eight named formats, and only one of them is the thing most people picture when they say "Spotify ads".

  • Audio Ads — the core unit. Served between tracks during an active listening session, with a small companion image on screen for anyone who happens to be looking.
  • Video Takeover — video served when the app is actually in the foreground, which is a much smaller slice of listening time than you would guess.
  • Podcast Ads — inventory inside podcast episodes, including third-party shows through the Spotify Audience Network, which Spotify launched in India with local publishers such as Ideabrew Studios and Audio Pitara.
  • Sponsored Playlist — brand association with Spotify's own owned-and-operated playlists.
  • Sponsored Session — the viewer opts into an ad in exchange for a block of ad-free listening.
  • Overlay, Homepage Takeover and Leaderboard — display placements, including 24-hour desktop homepage buys.

If podcast inventory is the part you are actually interested in — host-read versus announcer-read, show selection, whether the category is worth testing at all — that argument lives in our separate post on podcast advertising in India. This page stays on the Spotify platform itself and does not repeat it.

Why last-click will always tell you audio failed

Spotify's audio spec explains the problem better than any argument can. The unit is a maximum of 30 seconds, with Spotify recommending no more than 65 words, a single HTTPS clickthrough URL, and a 640×640 companion image. Clicks and impressions on the audio and the display unit are tracked together.

One clickable image, shown to an audience whose defining behaviour is not looking at the screen. That is not a broken ad product — it is an ad product doing a different job.

What Spotify Ads Manager does report is honest and useful for that job: impressions, unique reach, frequency, CPM, completion rate, clicks and CTR. Completion rate is the one that matters most in audio — it tells you whether the ad was actually delivered end to end, which on a non-skippable unit is usually high. CPM is your buying currency here, not CPC; if that framing is new to your team, our explainer on CPM covers how to think about a cost-per-thousand buy.

The measurement gap is worth knowing before you plan. Spotify Ad Analytics — the free platform that hosts the Spotify Pixel and Brand Lift surveys — lists ten available markets: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US. India is not on that published list today. And Spotify Brand Lift, where it does run, requires a minimum of 4 million impressions and a two-week minimum flight — a serious budget before a survey will even field.

So for an Indian advertiser today, plan to measure audio the old way: a clean pre-period baseline on brand search volume and direct traffic, a Spotify-only promo code or landing page, and a geo or flight-based holdout if your budget allows one. Ask your Spotify rep what measurement they can attach to your specific buy — the answer changes, and it is a fair question to make them answer before you commit.

How audio compares to the channels you are weighing it against

An India media planner is rarely choosing Spotify versus nothing. They are choosing it against YouTube, Meta and OTT for the same awareness rupees. These are the axes that actually decide it.

ChannelSkippable?Where attention isMeasurement depthCreative cost
Spotify audioNo skip on the audio unitEars only — screen usually off or pocketedReach, frequency, CPM, completion, CTR. Pixel/Brand Lift suite not listed for IndiaLowest — script, voice, mix. No shoot
YouTube in-streamMost inventory skippable after 5sEyes and ears, but skip pressure from second oneDeep — view-through, conversions, Brand Lift in IndiaHigh — shoot, edit, versioning
Meta feed and ReelsScrollable instantlyEyes, sound often offDeepest — pixel, CAPI, in-platform attributionMedium — but needs constant volume
OTT / CTVUsually non-skippableEyes and ears, shared living-room screenShallow — reach and completion, little device-level attributionHigh — TV-grade production expectations

Read the rows together and the trade is clear. Spotify gives you guaranteed delivery of a full message at the lowest creative cost of the four, and gives back the least attribution. YouTube ads give you the attribution and the sight-sound-motion, and charge you for both in production budget and in skip rate.

Targeting in India — and the language trap

Spotify Ads Manager offers demographic (age, gender, language), location, interest, fan base, device and custom-audience targeting, plus context targeting on in-stream placements — music genre, playlist tone, activity and setting, and podcast episode topic.

That context layer is the interesting one for India. Targeting a commute or a workout session is closer to targeting a state of mind than a demographic, and audio is one of the few places you can buy it.

Now the trap. Spotify's language targeting works on the listener's Spotify account language setting — not the language of the music they stream. A huge number of Indian listeners run the app in English and listen almost entirely to Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or Punjabi music. Target "English" and you are not buying English-speaking India; you are buying people who never changed a default.

Spotify also enforces a rule you should read twice: when you use language targeting, the creative must be in the language you targeted, or the ad is rejected. So the language decision is not a targeting toggle you flip at the end. It is a production decision you make before you book the voice artist. Which Indian languages appear in the picker is worth confirming inside your own account — Spotify's help page lists its supported languages globally but does not publish an India breakdown, and we are not going to guess at one.

If you are weighing whether to produce in a regional language at all, the honest case for and against is in our post on whether vernacular marketing actually works in India. Short version for audio specifically: register matters more than translation. A Hindi script written in English and then translated lands as a government announcement, not as a brand.

How to produce and launch your first Spotify audio campaign

The creative is the hard part here, not the media buy. A 30-second ad in the wrong language or the wrong register is money burned in a way a bad banner never is, because there is no thumbnail to save it.

  1. Decide the one thing to be remembered. Not three things. At 65 words you get a brand name, a reason, and a next step. Write the brand name in the first five seconds and again at the end.
  2. Pick the language before the script. Hindi, English, Hinglish or a regional language — decide first, then write natively in it. Spotify will reject creative that does not match the language you target, so this locks your media plan too.
  3. Write to the ear, not the page. Read it aloud with a timer. If it does not fit 30 seconds at a natural speaking pace, cut words rather than speed up the read — a rushed VO is the fastest way to sound like a loan advertisement.
  4. Cast for register, not polish. The voice should sound like the person your customer would trust saying this. A broadcast-perfect announcer voice reads as an ad; a normal, warm, regionally-correct voice reads as a recommendation.
  5. Produce to Spotify's spec. Up to 30 seconds, 44.1 kHz, and mixed to the loudness target Spotify publishes in its audio ad specs. Deliver the 640×640 companion image at the same time, under 200 KB.
  6. Build one campaign, two or three ad sets. Split by language or by context (commute versus workout), not by twelve micro-audiences. Audio needs frequency to work; slicing the budget thin defeats it.
  7. Set your measurement before you launch. Record the four-week baseline for brand search volume and direct sessions, create a Spotify-only URL or promo code, and agree with the client which of those numbers will be judged. Do this before spend, not after.
  8. Run at least two weeks, then judge it on the right numbers. Reach, frequency, completion rate and the movement in your baseline. If someone opens the report and scrolls to CTR first, the wrong conversation is about to happen.

When Spotify ads are worth it — and when to skip

Worth testing if you have a memorable name and a simple proposition, a launch or a seasonal moment to build volume around, an audience defined by activity rather than intent, and a client who will accept reach and recall as the outcome. Audio is also the cheapest way to get a full, uninterrupted 30 seconds of a person's attention that exists in Indian digital media right now.

Skip it if your entire funnel is measured on last click, if your budget is small enough that frequency would be spread across a whole state, or if the product needs to be seen to be understood. A sofa, a saree, a dashboard UI — none of those survive the trip through a pair of earphones.

Spotify's own advertising site leans on this argument too: it claims 86% of surveyed users mute social media or web browsing in order to listen. That is Spotify's own marketing data rather than neutral research, so weigh it accordingly — but the underlying behaviour is real and easy to verify on any Mumbai local at 9am.

If you want a channel mix where audio is a deliberate reach layer rather than a line item nobody can defend, that is the kind of planning our performance marketing team does — and the first thing we would fix is the measurement model, not the media plan. As a market range, performance-marketing management in India runs roughly ₹25,000–₹1,00,000 a month, with ad spend always separate from that fee.

Key takeaways: Spotify Ads Manager is self-serve for Indian advertisers, and the old Ad Studio name is retired. Audio is a 30-second, 65-word, non-skippable unit heard with the screen off, so buy it for reach and recall and never on last click. Language targeting runs on account language, not listening language, and your creative must match the language you target. Spotify's full Ad Analytics measurement suite does not list India today — plan your own baseline before you spend.

Frequently asked questions

Can Indian advertisers buy Spotify ads themselves?

Yes. Spotify's India advertising site presents Spotify Ads Manager as a self-serve buying platform, and self-serve access for Indian advertisers opened in April 2026 according to trade coverage of the launch. You do not need a sales conversation to run a standard audio, video or podcast campaign, though large custom placements such as a homepage takeover or a sponsored playlist will still involve Spotify's sales team.

Is Spotify Ad Studio still a thing?

No — that name has been retired. Spotify's current self-serve product is called Spotify Ads Manager, and it is where audio, video, display and podcast campaigns are built and reported on. Any article or tutorial still referring to "Ad Studio" is describing the same platform under its old branding, so check the date before you follow its screenshots.

What do Spotify ads cost in India?

Spotify does not publish an India rate card. Its Ads Manager help documentation states a campaign minimum of "250.00 in your local currency" without naming markets, and there is no rupee figure on Spotify's own India pages today — confirm the floor inside your account at setup. Delivery is auction-based and reported on a CPM basis, so a cost-per-thousand is the number to plan with, not a cost-per-click.

Can you target Hindi or regional-language listeners on Spotify?

Language targeting on Spotify works on the listener's Spotify account language setting, not the language of the music they stream — and many Indian listeners run the app in English while listening almost entirely in Hindi or a regional language. Spotify also rejects creative whose language does not match the language you targeted, so decide the language before you write the script. Confirm which Indian languages appear in the picker inside your own account.

How do you measure a Spotify campaign if nobody clicks?

Spotify Ads Manager reports impressions, unique reach, frequency, CPM, completion rate, clicks and CTR. Spotify Ad Analytics — the platform hosting the Spotify Pixel and Brand Lift surveys — currently lists ten markets and India is not among them, and Brand Lift needs at least 4 million impressions to field. So measure it the old way: a pre-campaign baseline on brand search and direct traffic, a Spotify-only promo code or landing page, and a geo or flight holdout if budget allows.
