ShareChat ads and Moj: what you are actually buying
The two platforms every Bharat deck mentions and almost no plan tests properly. Here is what they sell, who is measurably on them, and the test that tells you in six weeks.
Most Indian media plans treat ShareChat and Moj as a line in the "regional" slide that never gets a budget.
Usually that is the right call, reached the wrong way — nobody checked. This page is the check. If you are still deciding which channels deserve a slot at all, start with our guide to choosing marketing channels.
One boundary first. Whether vernacular marketing works as a strategy is a separate argument, and we have made it at length in does vernacular marketing in India actually work. This page assumes you have decided it might, and only covers the paid-media execution on these two platforms.
What ShareChat and Moj actually sell
Both apps belong to Mohalla Tech. You do not buy them separately — the self-serve tool is called ShareChat Ads Manager, and the agency version is the ShareChat & Moj Ads Business Centre, a multi-brand account with custom roles and centralised billing (ShareChat Ads, accessed October 2026).
| What you can buy | Buying route | Honestly good for |
|---|---|---|
| In-feed display banner | Self-serve | Cheap reach split by language. Offer and coupon messages. |
| In-feed short-form video (SFV) | Self-serve | The only format worth real creative money. Works on both apps. |
| Exit interstitial | Self-serve | Impression volume. Weak for considered purchases. |
| Hashtag challenge, creator-led campaign | Managed, via their sales team | Launches with a plan and a floor budget. Not a test. |
| Interactive lens or branded effect | Managed | Brands with an existing mascot, jingle or gesture to reuse. |
The format names come from ShareChat's own pages: short-form video and hashtag challenges on the ads site, banners and interactive lenses in their published case studies, and in-feed banners, in-feed video and exit interstitials in their February 2022 self-serve announcement.
Context, not exclusive reach.
How the buying actually works
The commercial mechanics are published, and they are more conventional than people expect. ShareChat's self-serve advertising terms, last updated 17 August 2026, state that inventory is sold through an auction, that you are charged only for ads delivered, and that all pricing is in Indian Rupees.
- Auction-based, with the pricing model agreed per performance outcome.
- Card payments billed monthly for the previous month's delivered ads. Invoiced advertisers get 30 days.
- Prepaid balances expire after 365 days for India-registered advertisers.
- No published minimum spend. ShareChat's ads site says it serves advertisers "regardless of the budget."
- A pixel exists for site events and conversions, announced in 2022. Validate it yourself before you trust it.
Primary targeting is language, layered with ad preferences and schedule and frequency controls. New to auction mechanics? Our media buying primer covers the vocabulary, and social media advertising covers how feed placements behave.
Who is really on ShareChat and Moj
This is where the deck and the data part company. The numbers you will be shown are company claims. The numbers in trade press are smaller, and both are published.
| Claim | Source | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 325 Mn+ monthly active users across both apps | ShareChat Ads site (company claim) | Accessed Oct 2026 |
| ~150 Mn monthly active users, both apps combined | Exchange4media, reporting the company | Jul 2026 |
| 79 Mn monthly active users, core ShareChat app | SimilarWeb, via Inc42 | Feb 2025 |
| ~63% of users in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities | CFO Manohar Charan, via Storyboard18 | Aug 2025 |
| ~95% of ShareChat's audience also uses Meta and YouTube | CFO Manohar Charan, via Inc42 | Apr 2026 |
Read that twice. The sales-page reach claim is roughly double what the company's own IPO reporting carried months later (Exchange4media, 3 July 2026). Plan on the smaller figure.
Languages are the real asset. Ads can run in 15+ Indic languages per ShareChat's ads site — Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia, Bhojpuri and more. That is a genuinely different buying unit from "India, English + Hindi."
Why Meta and Google campaigns miss these users — and where that argument breaks
The usual pitch is that this audience is unreachable elsewhere. That is not true, and ShareChat's own CFO says so: "It is not Meta versus ShareChat, it is Meta and ShareChat" — with roughly 95% of ShareChat's audience also on Meta and YouTube (Inc42, 13 April 2026).
So the gap is not reach. It is three narrower things.
- Language of the feed, not the ad. On Meta a Marathi ad lands in a mostly English-and-Hindi feed. On ShareChat the surrounding content is already Marathi, so the ad does not announce itself as an ad.
- Interest targeting thins out fast. Meta's interest signals for a Tier 3 Odia-speaking buyer are far sparser than for a Mumbai professional. Language-first targeting sidesteps the problem instead of fighting it.
- Auction pressure. Every D2C brand in India bids on the same Meta inventory. Fewer of them bid here.
These are real advantages. None is "you cannot reach these people otherwise." A deck saying that is wrong.
Vernacular creative is not translated creative
This is where most tests fail, before the media plan is even wrong. Pushing your Hindi asset through a translation tool is the most common way to waste this budget. What has to change:
- Script, not subtitles. The voiceover carries the message. A large share of this viewing is sound-on and scrolling fast.
- Native idiom over literal translation. A translated English tagline reads as corporate even when it is grammatically perfect. Write the line in the target language first.
- Faces and settings that match the market. A studio-white D2C shoot reads as a different country's advertising in a Bhojpuri feed.
- Text on screen, resized. Devanagari, Tamil and Malayalam need more horizontal room than Latin script at the same point size. Headlines break.
- Price and proof up front. Hold the "brand story" for a feed where you have earned patience.
- One language per creative. Mixed-language assets perform like neither.
Budget for it honestly: four languages means four scripts, voiceovers and edits — not one asset with four captions. Our D2C marketing strategy notes cover staging that cost against revenue.
How we run a language-first test
DH's own view, from our paid-media work: we do not start by splitting a budget across ShareChat's full language list. We start by finding out which language is already paying for itself somewhere else.
- Mine your existing data first. Pull Meta and Google reports by state. Find the two or three states already converting at or below your target cost without any language-specific creative. That is latent demand, and it is free to discover.
- Pick one language, not a bundle. Usually the strongest of those states. One language means one creative set, so the test measures the channel and not your production capacity.
- Build a matched pair. The same offer runs as a language-first creative on ShareChat and Moj, and as a language-first creative to the same state on Meta. Without the Meta arm you learn nothing you can act on.
- Instrument before you launch. Separate UTMs, a separate landing variant if the page is not already in that language, and server-side confirmation of the real event. Platform-reported conversions get a second look, not the benefit of the doubt.
- Hold it for six to eight weeks. Long enough for creative to stabilise, short enough that being wrong is cheap.
We have no published ShareChat client results to show you, and will not invent any. What we will say is that the matched pair is the step people skip, and the one that makes the answer defensible to a finance team.
The minimum viable test and the kill condition
Size the test so that losing all of it changes nothing about your quarter. That is the whole brief on spend. There is no sensible public rate card here, and anyone quoting you a ShareChat CPM benchmark is guessing.
| Test parameter | Our default |
|---|---|
| Languages | One. Two only if two states are genuinely tied. |
| Formats | In-feed short-form video. Add banner only if video clears the bar. |
| Duration | 6–8 weeks, continuous |
| Control arm | Same offer, same state, same language, on Meta |
| Primary metric | Your real cost per qualified action, server-confirmed |
| Scale trigger | Cost per action within reach of the Meta arm, and holding for two weeks |
Kill it when: after six weeks of stable delivery, the cost per qualified action is still far off your Meta control arm and the trend is flat or worsening; or delivery never stabilised; or you cannot reconcile platform-reported conversions with your own server data. Note the benchmark is your Meta number, not an industry average — there isn't a credible public one for this channel.
Agency fees for this kind of managed testing sit in the ₹25,000–₹1,00,000 a month range in the Indian market, and those fees exclude ad spend. Paid media is fast and it stops the day the spend stops — unlike organic, which takes three to six months to move and then compounds.
When ShareChat and Moj are not for you
Most readers should not run this test yet. The honest filters:
- Your Meta and Google accounts are not yet efficient. Fix the channels you can already measure first. A new platform will not rescue a weak offer.
- You sell B2B, enterprise software, or anything with a long signed-contract cycle. Wrong audience, wrong mindset.
- You cannot produce language-specific creative. Without it the test measures your translation tool.
- Your product needs English-language comprehension to be understood or bought.
- You need clean last-click attribution to release budget. Agencies interviewed by Storyboard18 in August 2025 described conversions as inconsistent and attribution as weak, and said some brands returned to Meta and YouTube after hyperlocal trials. ShareChat says it works with third-party measurement and brand-lift partners including Nielsen, DoubleVerify and mFilterIt, and cites Integral Ad Science verification that 99.9% of brand impressions are delivered brand-safe.
- Your spend is small and your patience is shorter. If one weak month would end the experiment, do not begin it.
There is also platform risk worth naming. Mohalla Tech's operating revenue was broadly flat in FY25 at ₹723 crore against ₹718 crore, with ad revenue described as under strain amid a structural slowdown in key ad categories (Storyboard18, 29 December 2025). The company has since reported turning operationally profitable and is planning an IPO of up to $400 million. Read that as a business stabilising after heavy cuts, not as a channel on a growth tear.
Where this fits in next year's plan
Treat ShareChat and Moj as a language experiment that happens to run on two apps — not as a social channel you are obliged to be on.
The transferable asset is the creative. A Marathi script that works here works in hyperlocal campaigns, in regional programmatic buys, in state-level Meta campaigns and in moment marketing around regional festivals. The media buy is rentable; the language capability is yours to keep.
And if your audience is genuinely off the mainstream grid, the platform question may not be the right one at all — reaching farmers without Google works through a different set of levers entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run ShareChat ads myself, without a sales rep?
Yes. ShareChat Ads Manager is self-serve, and ShareChat's self-serve advertising terms, last updated 17 August 2026, describe an auction where you are charged only for delivered ads, priced in Indian Rupees. Managed formats such as hashtag challenges and interactive lenses still go through their sales team.
Are Moj ads bought separately from ShareChat ads?
No. ShareChat's own ads pages present one account covering both apps, and the agency product is branded the ShareChat and Moj Ads Business Centre. You choose placement and language inside the same campaign rather than opening a second platform.
What does ShareChat advertising cost?
There is no published rate card and no minimum spend stated on ShareChat's ads site, which says it serves advertisers regardless of budget. Inventory is auctioned, so your cost depends on language, format and competition. Treat any CPM figure quoted to you without a named source and date as unverified.
How many languages can I target?
ShareChat's ads site states 15+ Indic languages. Its 2022 self-serve announcement named 15, including Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Language is the primary targeting control, which is the main structural difference from running the same campaign on Meta.
Is ShareChat a safe platform to commit budget to?
Treat it as stabilising rather than scaling. Operating revenue was broadly flat in FY25 at ₹723 crore versus ₹718 crore with ad revenue under strain, per Storyboard18 in December 2025, and the parent has since reported operational profitability and an IPO plan of up to $400 million. Size tests so a platform shift does not hurt.
