Nykaa Ads: How Beauty Brands Buy Visibility
Nykaa publishes no ad console and no rate card. What is genuinely buyable, what it costs you to buy it from a retailer that owns 13 brands of its own, and when the money belongs elsewhere.
If you are here to shop, this is the wrong page — Nykaa's own app sells the products. This is for a beauty or personal-care brand that wants its products seen inside Nykaa, and for whoever signs off that budget.
Most writing on "Nykaa ads" covers Nykaa spending money. This covers you spending with Nykaa.
The budgeting and testing mechanics are the same as any paid channel — our performance marketing guide covers those. What this page adds is the part no generic guide covers: a vertical marketplace where the retailer is also a competitor. It does not rebuild your channel mix (D2C marketing strategy) or the store-and-catalogue job (ecommerce marketing).
What a brand can actually buy on Nykaa
Nykaa publishes no placement catalogue. What its own investor documents describe, and what brands negotiate in practice, falls into four families. Keep them separate, because only two are advertising.
| Family | What it is | Is it advertising? | What it moves |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-platform placements | Listing and search positions, category and homepage slots, banners, notification and mailer inclusion. | Yes. Media, bought by period or volume. | Clicks on your product pages — the nearest thing to retail media. |
| Brand storytelling | Brand pages, launch features, editorial and creator content. | Mostly. Media plus production. | Consideration for an unknown range. Longer shelf life. |
| Events and sampling | Nykaa's sale events and its Nykaaland festival: pop-ups, sampling, launches. | Borderline. Part media, part activation. | Trial — the hardest thing to buy. |
| Commercial and trade terms | Margin, brand-funded discounts, stocking commitments, co-op. | No. A buying negotiation. | Your unit economics. Often mistaken for ad spend. |
That last row is where brands lose control. One agreement can bundle visibility, discount funding and stocking into a single number, and then nobody can say what the media returned.
Nykaa's own filings show the first three families are real. Its FY25 investor presentation (May 2025) describes brand visibility campaigns, on-app visibility and brand sponsorships around its Mega-Sale events, with 80+ participating brands, and carries an "Ad-Income (₹ Cr)" chart among its gross-margin drivers. Its Q1 FY26 presentation (12 August 2025) lists "higher visibility income (23% YoY increase)" among the margin drivers for its B2B arm, and puts "on-app brand storytelling" in its brand-launch stack.
On events, the Nykaaland 2026 page (checked 15 October 2026) runs the festival on 23–25 October 2026 in Delhi, with brands as exhibitors and sampling "subject to brand participation, availability, activities and brand discretion". The 2025 edition carried more than 60 brands, per exchange4media (10 November 2025). Neither states what participation costs, so neither do we.
The shelf owner competes too.
Is there a self-serve Nykaa ads dashboard?
No public one, as of October 2026. Nykaa publishes no advertiser console, no documented ad formats and no rate card on its own properties, and names none in its filings. Buying visibility on Nykaa is a sales-led negotiation with its brand and category teams, not a login. What that changes:
- Your leverage is category position, not your bid. There is no auction to outbid, only a conversation — and your assortment, growth rate and discount funding are the currency.
- Reporting is whatever is agreed. Get metric definitions in writing before the money moves.
- You cannot pause it on a Tuesday. Committed periods behave like sponsorships, not like media you optimise weekly.
- No public benchmarks exist. Nykaa discloses no ad pricing, and its marketing support revenue sits bundled inside revenue from operations in its own glossary. A quoted "standard" Nykaa CPC is somebody's private account.
That is the opposite of a horizontal marketplace, where a brand logs in, sets a bid and reads a report the same day — see Amazon ads in India. Bring that model to Nykaa and you will budget for something that does not exist.
The private-label problem a horizontal marketplace does not have
Nykaa does not only host beauty brands. It owns them.
On its Q1 FY27 earnings call (4 August 2026) Nykaa said it works with 10,000-plus brand partners — and that House of Nykaa, its own portfolio, spans 13 consumer brands at an annualised GMV of ₹3,760 crore, up 39% year on year. Its Q4 FY26 deck (May 2026) puts FY26 House of Nykaa GMV at ₹3,176 crore, up 49%, against group GMV of ₹19,963 crore.
Working through the maths ourselves: those two FY26 figures give House of Nykaa roughly 16% of group GMV. Nykaa does not publish that share — it is our arithmetic on two numbers in the same deck, so treat it as directional. That deck also names "higher share of House of Nykaa and featured brands" as a gross-margin driver.
That is the point of this page. The retailer's margin improves when its own brands and its paying brands take more of the mix. You are in the second group; your shelf-mate is in the first.
None of that is misconduct, and we are not alleging any. Every modern retailer runs private label, and Nykaa has stated positions that cut the other way — on the same call it said "all of the discounts that are passed on to the consumer on the MRP are funded by the brand" and that it "does not do retailer-funded discounting as a policy". No public evidence shows third-party brands being suppressed, and we found no documentation of Nykaa's ranking logic anywhere.
What it does mean is narrower, and still worth planning around:
- Your ad spend funds a competitor's parent. A strategic cost, not a performance metric. It belongs in the decision, not the ROAS calculation.
- Category data flows one way. The platform sees what sells, at what price, in what shade, before you do.
- Your best proposition is the most copyable one. If a hero SKU works, a house brand can meet that demand with better margin and no media cost.
What a beauty listing rewards before you spend a rupee
Beauty listings behave differently from most categories. Three differences decide whether paid visibility converts or just burns.
- Reviews and ratings carry the decision. Star ratings and review counts sit on every Nykaa listing, and shoppers sort and filter with them. Nykaa publishes nothing about how reviews feed its ranking, so we will not claim they do — but a paid placement landing traffic on a product with four reviews is a conversion problem you paid for. Build review volume first, using the same discipline as generating reviews honestly: ask every genuine buyer, make it easy, never buy them.
- Listings are shade-level, not product-level. A foundation is a dozen listings, not one. A paid push that drives demand to an out-of-stock shade wastes the spend and dents the listing. Fix inventory depth per variant first.
- Trial beats persuasion. Nobody commits ₹1,800 to an unfamiliar serum from a banner. That is why sampling and events are worth more in beauty than their impression counts suggest, and why creator content does heavy lifting — see why smaller creators often convert better.
Timing matters as much as format: Nykaa concentrates demand into its own sale events and the festive quarter, covered in the festive ecommerce playbook.
Marketplace spend or owned demand: how to decide
For a brand selling on Nykaa and its own site, the question is never "Nykaa or D2C". It is which rupee goes where this quarter. Decide by the job, not the channel.
| The job | Where it belongs | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Be findable where beauty shoppers already search | Nykaa | Intent is already in the building. You buy position. |
| Launch a new range to an unknown audience | Nykaa, with content and sampling | A new SKU lacks trial and reviews. The platform has both. |
| Own a customer relationship and repeat purchase | Your own site | The marketplace keeps the customer. You get an order. |
| Build demand for the brand name | Owned and social | Placement inside a store cannot create search volume outside it. |
| Protect margin, or defend against a house brand copying you | Your own site | No commission, no discount funding, and brand preference is the one moat a retailer cannot replicate. |
One measurement warning: marketplace ads report inside the marketplace's own walls. You cannot see the Nykaa placement that sent someone to your site a week later, and adding the two reports together double-counts — how attribution actually breaks has the method.
How we weigh Nykaa against owned demand
This is Digital Hangover's own view, from the beauty and D2C work we do — not a benchmark, and we are not quoting client numbers.
Our rule: marketplace visibility is rent, owned demand is equity. Both are legitimate purchases. They are not interchangeable, and the mistake we see most is treating rent as if it compounds.
For a D2C beauty brand we start from three questions, in order.
- Is the listing ready to receive traffic? Reviews, shade-level stock, images, ingredient copy. If not, paid visibility is a tax. We fix the listing first, every time — it is also the cheapest step.
- What does this spend buy that owned channels cannot? Position in front of in-market beauty shoppers, and trial. If the answer is "awareness", the money is in the wrong place — which is why we keep creator work as its own line, not a sub-head of marketplace spend.
- Is the brand getting less dependent, or more? If marketplace share of revenue is climbing while direct search for the brand name is flat, you are renting growth you cannot keep.
Nykaa itself shows why. On that Q1 FY27 call it called itself "a media/marketing platform in the sense that we now have over 170,000 content creators" — a retailer with that much owned attention does not need any single brand. Build the small version your brand can own, and the negotiation changes shape.
Our working split for a brand with a real D2C site: fund listing fundamentals plus one time-boxed visibility commitment, and keep most discretionary budget on demand you keep. Reviewed quarterly, because the answer moves with the brand's dependence, not the platform's calendar.
What a better Nykaa quarter looks like
You do not need a rate card to make progress. You need to stop buying visibility your listings cannot convert.
- Audit listing-readiness at shade level. One row per variant: reviews, stock, images, copy. Most brands find the problem here.
- Split media from trade in your records. Three lines — visibility, discount funding, commercial terms. Never one bundled number.
- Time-box the first commitment to one sale event, with metric definitions and a read-out agreed up front, so you can decline a renewal without drama.
- Track brand search in parallel. If marketplace revenue grows while brand demand does not, you are renting.
Frequently asked questions
How do I advertise on Nykaa as a brand?
Through Nykaa's brand and category teams, not a login. As of October 2026 Nykaa publishes no self-serve advertiser console or public rate card, so visibility is negotiated, usually alongside your commercial terms. Before approaching them, make sure your listings can convert the traffic: reviews, shade-level stock, complete product copy. Then get metric definitions and a time-boxed commitment in writing.
Does Nykaa have an ads platform like Amazon Ads?
Not a public one. Amazon gives Indian sellers a self-serve console with bids, budgets and same-day reporting. Nykaa documents no equivalent and names none in its filings. In practice: no auction to outbid, no daily optimisation lever, no published benchmarks — so treat any quoted "standard" Nykaa CPC or ROAS with suspicion.
Does Nykaa favour its own brands over the brands it sells?
There is no public evidence that it does, and we are not alleging it — Nykaa does not document its ranking logic anywhere. What is on the record is the structure: on its Q1 FY27 call (4 August 2026) Nykaa reported 13 of its own consumer brands at ₹3,760 crore annualised GMV, and its Q4 FY26 deck names a higher share of House of Nykaa and featured brands as a gross-margin driver. Plan around the incentive, not an accusation.
What does advertising on Nykaa cost?
Nykaa publishes no pricing, and its marketing support revenue sits bundled inside revenue from operations in its own glossary, so no credible public figure exists. Anyone quoting a fixed rate is quoting a private deal. Budget it like a sponsorship: defined period, defined deliverable, stated read-out. Keep discount funding on a separate line from the media.
Should a small beauty brand spend on Nykaa or its own site first?
Fix the Nykaa listing first, because it costs almost nothing: reviews, shade-level stock, images, ingredient copy. Then spend on your own site before buying marketplace visibility, unless you need trial or position in front of in-market beauty shoppers. Visibility is rent; owned demand is equity, and a small brand cannot afford rent on traffic its listings cannot convert.
