You are a web design studio. A client asks who handles their search traffic. You have no SEO team — and no wish to hand the relationship to another agency.
That is the moment white label SEO gets sold to you. This page is about what you are actually signing, and it sits inside our SEO guide.
One split first. If you are the client choosing who to hire, read how to choose a digital marketing agency instead. This page is the other side of the desk: an agency choosing a supplier. And if the real question is whether to hire your own SEO person rather than buy delivery, that argument is in SEO agency versus in-house.
What white label SEO actually means
White label SEO — also sold as SEO reseller programmes, white label SEO services, or outsourced SEO for agencies — is a wholesale arrangement between two agencies.
The delivery partner does the audits, the technical fixes, the content and the links. You put your name on the output, bill the client yourself, and stay the only face they deal with. The partner's name never appears.
Three things do not move, whatever the contract says. The client is yours. The invoice is yours. And when something goes wrong, you are the one in the room.
Google puts the accountability bluntly in its own hiring guidance: "Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire" (Google Search Central, Do you need an SEO?, last updated 5 June 2026). Your client applies that sentence to you, not to your partner.
Who the client can see.
The three operating models
Most arrangements are sold as one thing and are really one of three. Decide which you are in before you quote anyone.
| Full white label | Grey label | Referral | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who holds the client relationship | You, entirely. The partner is invisible | You, but the partner is introduced as your SEO specialist | The partner. You hand the client over |
| Who is on the client calls | You only. You carry every answer | Both, with you chairing the call | The partner, sometimes with you observing |
| Who carries the risk | You. Delivery failures land on your brand | Shared, because the client can see who does what | The partner, minus the hit of a bad introduction |
| Margin shape | Retail minus wholesale. Widest spread, most work to earn it | Narrower, since the client can guess a specialist's rate | One-off or trailing commission. No spread, no cost, no control |
Full white label pays best and exposes you most. Referral is safe and loses you the account. Grey label is the one most agencies should pick and the one least often offered, because it asks the partner to be visible.
The four failure modes
White-label deals rarely collapse over rankings. They collapse over these four, and each has a fix you have to set up before signing, not after.
- You cannot answer a technical question in front of your client. The client asks why 40 product pages dropped out of the index. You have nothing. Credibility goes in that silence, not in the report. Fix it two ways: get a pre-call brief from the partner in writing, and have one person on your side read our technical SEO primer so the vocabulary is not new.
- Reporting arrives in the partner's template with the partner's branding. A logo in a footer, a tool watermark, a sender address — any of them ends the arrangement in one forwarded email. Reporting in your branding is a contract clause, not a favour. Agree the metrics too, using our SEO KPIs list.
- Work quality is invisible until a client complains. You are reading a summary of work you did not see. Spot-check what shipped rather than what was described — run the SEO audit checklist yourself on one page a month. This matters most on links. Google defines link spam as "the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings" and lists "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" among the examples, with violating sites liable to "rank lower in results or not appear in results at all" (Google Search Central, Spam policies, last updated 28 August 2026). If the partner buys links, your client's domain takes the hit and your client calls you.
- The client discovers the arrangement. That is usually survivable. Having claimed an in-house team you do not have is not. Never say "our SEO team" if there is no one — say you work with a specialist partner under your management, and decide that wording now rather than mid-call.
What to demand before you sign
Six things. Get all six in the contract, in writing, before the first client is sold anything.
- A named account lead. A person, named in the agreement, not a shared inbox or a ticket queue. Add a notice period for replacing them.
- A response-time commitment, split by urgency. One window for a client-facing question you need answered today, a longer one for routine delivery. A blanket "within 48 hours" is useless with a client on the phone.
- Reporting in your branding, delivered to you. Your logo, your file names, your commentary layer, sent to you and never direct to the client. How to structure what goes in it is in our SEO reporting post.
- A no-poach clause. Restraint clauses are treated differently in India depending on who they bind. Writing in Bar & Bench, Ritika Ganju and Milind Sharma of Rise Legal note that courts construe non-solicitation clauses between companies liberally and tend to uphold them where the parties are on roughly equal footing, citing the Delhi High Court upholding a non-hire clause in a consulting agreement between two companies — while post-termination restraints on individual employees are scrutinised far more closely under Section 27 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 (Bar & Bench, 29 July 2026). Your clause is agency-to-agency, the better-placed category — but have a lawyer draft it, not a template.
- A defined escalation path. Who you ring when the account lead goes quiet. At what point you can pause the retainer. What happens if a deadline is missed twice.
- Access ownership. Search Console, Analytics and the ad accounts must sit under your or the client's ownership, with the partner added as a user. If the partner owns the properties, you lose the history the day the relationship ends. Google's vetting guidance tells site owners to "only grant read access to Search Console" at the audit stage — apply that to your partner too.
Read the partner's proposal the way a sceptical client reads yours — our post on reading an SEO proposal works in both directions. Google's hiring guidance is blunt: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." A partner who promises one to win your business will promise it to your client.
The margin conversation, honestly
Reseller pricing is wholesale-plus. The partner quotes you a delivery rate. You quote the client a retail rate. The gap pays for your account management, your risk and your profit — in that order.
Three things eat that gap, and resellers routinely forget all three:
- Your own hours. Client calls, chasing the partner, writing commentary the report lacks. Real delivery cost, on your side of the line.
- Scope creep you cannot pass on. The partner bills for the extra page. Your client was quoted a fixed monthly fee. The difference is yours.
- Early churn. Organic work takes roughly three to six months to show meaningful movement, and compounds after that. Sell a three-month contract and you are selling a result that may not have landed yet.
We are not publishing a reseller rate card, because an honest one does not exist — scope moves the number more than anything else. Directionally, SEO retainers in India run about ₹25,000 to ₹1,50,000+ a month. Your retail price must sit inside what your client will pay, and your wholesale cost inside that. See SEO cost in India and digital marketing packages.
The structural mistake: a spread so thin your own account management is unpaid. That deal does not fail in month one. It fails in month five, when you stop servicing it.
Do not resell SEO if…
Three honest disqualifiers. Any one of them is enough.
- Nobody on your side can read a report and judge it. If every number in a monthly report looks equally plausible to you, you are not reselling a service. You are forwarding a PDF.
- You have no appetite to learn the basics. You do not need to run audits. You do need to know what an index issue is, why a redirect matters, and what a reasonable timeline looks like. A few hours of reading, not a certification.
- Your client needs daily contact. Some clients treat their agency as an extension of their own team and message at 9pm. A layer between you and the person doing the work cannot survive that tempo.
Where we stand on white-label work
Our own position, stated plainly so you can weigh the source: Digital Hangover is an agency, and this page is advice from one side of the table. If you were to approach us as a reselling partner, these are the terms we would want — not because they favour us, but because every arrangement we have seen fail was missing one of them.
What we would require for it to work:
- Grey label over full invisibility. We will sit on your call, introduced as your SEO partner, with you chairing it.
- A named lead on both sides. One person on ours, one on yours who can make a decision.
- Reporting in your branding, sent to you, with our working notes attached so you can brief your client properly.
- Access owned by you or your client. We get added as a user, not as the owner.
What we would decline: arrangements where we may not speak to anyone who can answer a question about the site, and retainers priced so that the reseller's margin comes out of delivery hours. We would rather say no than deliver thin work with someone else's logo on it.
White label SEO in India is sold hardest to agencies who need it least — those who could hire one capable person and keep the margin themselves.
What a partnership worth keeping looks like in six months
Six months in, a good arrangement is boring. Reports land on time in your branding. Your account manager answers most client questions without escalating. The partner flags problems before your client does.
You will also know something no pitch deck told you: whether SEO is a line you should own. Some agencies keep reselling. Others learn enough to hire. Both are wins — but only if the work was visible to you from the start.
Frequently asked questions
What is white label SEO?
White label SEO is a wholesale arrangement where one agency delivers the SEO work and another sells it to the end client under its own brand. The reselling agency owns the client relationship and the invoice. The delivery partner stays unnamed. It is also sold as an SEO reseller programme or outsourced SEO for agencies.
What is the difference between white label and grey label SEO?
In full white label, the delivery partner is invisible and you answer every client question alone. In grey label, the partner is introduced as your named specialist and joins client calls while you chair them. Grey label narrows your margin slightly and removes the single biggest failure point — the technical question you cannot answer.
Do I have to tell my client I use an SEO reseller?
There is no rule forcing disclosure, and most clients do not ask. The problem is never the arrangement — it is having claimed an in-house team you do not have. Say you work with a specialist partner under your management. Google also notes that you remain responsible for the actions of any company you hire.
What should outsourced SEO for agencies include in reporting?
Your branding and your file names, delivery to you rather than to your client, the metrics you agreed in advance, and working notes showing what actually shipped that month — not just what improved. Without the working notes you cannot judge quality or brief your client, and you are forwarding a document you have not verified.
Does Digital Hangover offer white label SEO services in India?
We work mostly direct, under our own name, and take partner-led work selectively. Our conditions are grey label rather than full invisibility, a named lead on both sides, reporting in your branding with our working notes attached, and account access owned by you or your client. We decline arrangements where we cannot speak to anyone technical.
SEO delivery you can put your name on
Direct or partner-led, the terms are the same: a named lead, reporting you can defend, and work you can inspect.
