Solve for
Nothing is sent anywhere. Every calculation runs in your browser, and no figure you type leaves this page.
How to use this calculator
- Pick what you are missing. Solving for CPM is the standard backwards-looking calculation. Solving for impressions turns it into a media planner. Solving for spend answers "what do I need to budget to reach this many people?"
- Fill the two fields that stay open. The third greys out — that is the one being computed.
- Add your click-through rate if you have it. This is the part most calculators skip, and it is where the useful answer lives.
- Read the effective cost per click. That number is directly comparable to what the platform would charge you on CPC bidding. If it is lower, buying impressions is the better deal for you.
The formula, in all three directions
| You want | Formula | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| CPM | (spend ÷ impressions) × 1,000 | Reporting on a campaign that has run |
| Impressions | (spend ÷ CPM) × 1,000 | Planning reach against a fixed budget |
| Ad spend | (CPM × impressions) ÷ 1,000 | Budgeting to hit a reach target |
| Effective CPC | spend ÷ (impressions × CTR) | Deciding between CPM and CPC bidding |
The full explanation of the metric — what an impression is, why platforms define it differently, and where CPM misleads — lives on our CPM guide.
Why the effective CPC number matters
Most advertisers pick a bidding model on instinct and never check it.
The check is arithmetic. When you buy on CPM you pay a fixed price for impressions and collect whatever clicks your creative earns. A high click-through rate makes those clicks very cheap; a weak one makes them ruinous.
So run the number. If your effective CPC comes out well below what the platform quotes for cost-per-click bidding on the same audience, impressions are the cheaper purchase. If it comes out above, you are paying a premium for reach you may not need.
What moves your CPM
- Audience narrowness. Fewer people, same number of advertisers chasing them, higher clearing price.
- Placement. Feed, Reels, Stories, Audience Network and Display all clear at different levels within the same campaign.
- Seasonality. Festive season and end-of-quarter pushes raise the price of everyone's impressions, including yours.
- Creative quality. Platforms discount impressions for ads people engage with. A weak ad costs more per thousand and converts less.
- Frequency. On a small audience the same people see the ad repeatedly, engagement decays and the price drifts up. Watch it alongside impression share.
What Meta impressions cost in practice is covered in what Instagram and Facebook ads cost in India, and the search-side equivalent in Google Ads cost in India.
Why we do not publish a "good CPM" number
Because an honest one does not exist as a single figure.
CPM moves with platform, placement, audience, industry and time of year, and it is not comparable across platforms at all — because Meta and Google do not count an impression the same way. Most India CPM benchmarks you will find are undated, unsourced, or US figures converted to rupees.
Your own account history is the only benchmark worth managing against. Watch the trend, not the number.
Frequently asked questions
What is the CPM formula?
CPM equals total ad spend divided by impressions, multiplied by 1,000. The multiplication is the whole point of the metric: CPM is the price of one thousand impressions, not of one. Rearranged, spend equals CPM times impressions divided by 1,000, and impressions equal spend divided by CPM multiplied by 1,000.
How do I work out how many impressions my budget will buy?
Divide your budget by the CPM you expect to pay, then multiply by 1,000. Switch this calculator to Impressions mode and it does it for you. Treat the answer as a planning estimate rather than a promise, because CPM is set by an auction and moves with competition, audience size and time of year.
Is CPM cheaper than CPC?
It depends entirely on your click-through rate. Buying impressions is cheaper when your creative earns a high CTR, because you pay the same for the impressions and collect more clicks from them. Enter your CTR in this calculator and it returns your effective cost per click, which you can compare directly against what the platform would charge you on CPC bidding.
What counts as an impression?
An impression is counted when your ad is served, and the definition differs by platform. Meta counts an impression the first time an ad enters the screen. Google Display counts a served impression, with viewable impressions reported separately. Because the definitions differ, CPM figures are not directly comparable across platforms.
What is a good CPM in India?
We are not going to publish a figure, because an honest one does not exist as a single number. CPM varies by platform, placement, audience narrowness, industry and season, and most published India CPM benchmarks are undated, unsourced or converted from US data. Use your own account history as the benchmark and watch the direction of travel rather than the absolute number.
