ChatGPT ads reached 47% of gaming chats in one US panel

Panel data suggests OpenAI is monetising some retail categories far faster than others — but the denominator is missing.

What happened: Search Engine Journal reported on 23 September 2026 that sponsored ads appeared in 47% of ChatGPT conversations Comscore classed as video gaming in June 2026, up from 3–4% in March. Source: Comscore's Q2 2026 AI Intelligence Report — an opt-in panel of US PC activity only.

What the 47% actually measures

Comscore counts conversations, not users or impressions: the share of chats it sorts into a retail category containing a sponsored ad. Gaming went 3–4% in March–April, 18% in May, 47% in June; toys and hobbies hit 24%, books, music and video 22%, per Search Engine Journal's reporting →.

The denominator is the weak spot, and SEJ says so. Comscore's report → publishes no monthly conversation counts, no categorisation method, and no rule on whether one ad marks a whole thread. If ad-free plans sit in the denominator, the real rate among eligible chats is higher than 47%. OpenAI's help documentation → says ads run only on Free and Go, sit below a response and are labelled sponsored, and that US testing began 9 February 2026.

What this means for Indian marketers

None of this measurement is Indian. The buying side is: OpenAI said on 31 August 2026 → that advertisers can buy ChatGPT ads via Ads Manager across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. No Indian category-level data exists publicly.

The useful read is sequencing. If gaming, toys and hobbies, and media get monetised first in one market, those are the categories where an organic citation starts sharing screen space soonest — the sponsored agents test we covered on 18 September, one step on. One panel is not a market and one month is not a trend; treat June as a preliminary observation, as SEJ does.

If your category is retail-adjacent, baseline your citation share now.
