Google AI Mode now shows link carousels for breaking topics

A new carousel format surfaces source articles directly inside AI Mode answers — for some developing-news searches, not all.

What happened: Google is now showing horizontal link carousels — article cards with an image, headline, source and date — inside AI Mode responses for developing and breaking-news topics. Robby Stein, Google's VP of Product for Search, announced the rollout on X on 25 August 2026. It extends a carousel format Google first added to AI Overviews back in May.

What changed

Until now, AI Mode mostly cited sources as inline text links inside the generated answer. The new carousel sits between blocks of AI-written text and shows several source articles side by side — closer to how a "top stories" panel looks in classic search than to a typical citation. Search Engine Roundtable's coverage → notes that Preferred Sources get highlighted within these carousels, which gives publishers who've set that up in Search Console an extra reason to pay attention.

Stein described the goal plainly: "Our goal with AI Search is to make it easy to connect with original coverage and a range of perspectives." He was also clear it's not universal yet — the carousel shows up "for only some searches" about developing topics, not on every query.

What this means for SEO and content teams

A carousel placement is a more prominent, more visual spot than a buried text citation — early reporting suggests it could mean a real click-through gain for the sites that land in it. But there's a catch worth flagging honestly: as Search Engine Journal reports, Google hasn't shipped a Search Console filter that isolates carousel impressions and clicks, so there's no clean way yet to measure whether a specific page is winning this placement — and no guarantee it appears for a given developing-topic story at all.

The bigger, ongoing tension hasn't gone away either — at least one publisher has pushed back publicly, arguing AI-generated summaries still absorb the value of a search even with a carousel link attached. Worth tracking as this rolls out wider rather than reacting to it today.

If getting cited inside AI Mode and AI Overviews is part of your visibility strategy, this is the kind of surface-level change our AI-SEO / AEO / GEO service tracks as a matter of course.
