What changed
Ben Fisher posted the first sighting on LinkedIn and Barry Schwartz replicated it, describing it as Google "turning the local knowledge panels, your Google Business Profile, into an AI Overview listing" — his write-up and screenshots →
Treat the scope as unknown. Google has said nothing, no rollout percentage is published, and Schwartz notes Google has been testing variations of this for a while. It may be a limited test that disappears, like plenty before it. What is not in doubt is the direction of travel.
What this means for local businesses
The knowledge panel used to be a fact sheet — hours, phone, directions, reviews. If it becomes a generated summary, something else is happening: Google is writing a paragraph *about* your business, from your profile, your reviews, your site and whatever else it has. You do not get to approve that paragraph.
Which makes the inputs matter more than they did last week. Thin categories, an out-of-date description, three-year-old photos and unanswered reviews were survivable when the panel just listed facts. They are the raw material now. Nothing to panic about and nothing new to buy — but the profile hygiene we cover in our guide to optimising a Google Business Profile has quietly become higher-stakes, and it is the first thing we fix in any local SEO engagement.
