Link Building in India: What Still Works in 2026
Which tactics still earn links, which ones quietly waste money, and why the cheapest link package in your inbox is the most expensive thing you can buy.
Every Indian business with a website gets the same email. "500 high DA backlinks, ₹5,000."
It is the most expensive ₹5,000 you can spend, because undoing it costs more than the links ever earned.
This is the honest version: what still works, what does not, and how to earn links without buying them. It sits inside our SEO guide.
What is link building?
Link building is earning links from other websites to yours. Google has always treated a link as a vote of confidence, and that has not changed.
What has changed is which votes count. Relevance, editorial intent and the quality of the linking site now matter far more than raw count. A single link from a respected industry publication is worth more than hundreds from directories nobody reads.
Links are one part of off-page SEO. The wider category — brand mentions, citations, unlinked references — is covered in off-page SEO.
What still works
Roughly in order of how reliably it produces links for Indian businesses.
| Tactic | Effort | Why it works | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original data and research | High | Journalists and bloggers need figures to cite, and India-specific data is genuinely scarce | Anyone with account or transaction data they can anonymise |
| Digital PR | High | A real story in a real publication earns links you could never buy | Brands with something newsworthy |
| Genuinely useful free tools | High upfront, low after | People link to things they use repeatedly | Anyone who can build one |
| Expert commentary | Medium | Journalists need sources on deadline. Being reachable and quotable is the whole skill. | Founders and specialists |
| Guest posts on relevant sites | Medium | Still works where the site is real, the audience overlaps and nobody paid for placement | Most B2B and services |
| Broken link building | Medium | You are solving a problem for the site owner, which is why the reply rate is decent | Content-heavy niches |
| Partnerships and suppliers | Low | Your existing relationships already have websites. Most businesses never ask. | Everyone. Start here. |
What does not work any more
- Bulk directory submissions. Two hundred directory links from unrelated sites do nothing. Local business directories with real traffic are a separate thing — see citations.
- Blog comment links. Almost universally nofollowed, and where they are not, the sites are usually spam.
- Private blog networks. Networks of sites built purely to sell links. When one gets identified, everything in it goes with it.
- Reciprocal link exchanges at scale. Two sites linking to each other is normal. Fifty sites in a ring is a pattern.
- Article directories. Long dead.
- Anything sold by volume. The moment the pitch is a number of links rather than a set of publications, you are buying a pattern rather than a reputation.
About buying links
Paid links that pass ranking credit violate Google's guidelines. That is the plain fact, and everything else follows from it.
The honest picture is that they sometimes work, for a while, and the downside is asymmetric. When a network is identified, the links stop counting and can drag the site with them. Recovery means auditing and disavowing, which takes months and costs more than the links did.
The commercial version of the argument is simpler: the money buys a temporary rented asset. The same budget spent on one piece of original India-specific data can earn links for years and cannot be taken away.
What we will not do is tell you paid links never work. That would be dishonest. What we will say is that we do not build them, and that the risk sits with the site owner rather than the vendor.
How to judge a link before you chase it
- Would you want the traffic even with no SEO value? If the answer is no, the link is not worth having.
- Is the site topically related to yours? Relevance now does most of the work that raw authority used to.
- Does the page have real readers? Check whether anything on the site gets shared, commented on or cited.
- Is the link editorial? Placed because a writer chose to, not because a slot was bought.
- Does the anchor text look natural? A profile where every link says "best seo services india" is a pattern, not a reputation.
- Would you be comfortable if a competitor saw it? The simplest test there is.
A realistic first ninety days
- Days 1–10 · Audit what you have. Know your existing profile before adding to it. If you have bought links before, find them first.
- Days 11–20 · Harvest the relationships. List every supplier, client, partner, association and event you are connected to. Ask. This is the highest-return fortnight of the quarter.
- Days 21–45 · Build one linkable asset. Original data from your own numbers, honestly aggregated and anonymised, with the method stated. India-specific figures are scarce enough to be genuinely wanted.
- Days 46–75 · Promote it properly. A linkable asset nobody sees earns nothing. Targeted outreach to people who write about your category, not a mass mailout.
- Days 76–90 · Measure referring domains, not links. Fifty links from one site is one vote. Track how many distinct domains reference you.
What link building costs
Done properly it is expensive, because it is people's time — research, writing, outreach, relationship building. It usually sits inside a broader SEO retainer rather than being priced per link, and in India that retainer typically runs ₹25,000 to ₹1,50,000+ a month depending on scope.
Anyone quoting a per-link price is selling placements, which is the model this whole post argues against. Full breakdown in what SEO costs in India.
Honest timelines
Links are the slowest part of SEO. Outreach takes weeks to produce replies, replies take weeks to produce placements, and placements take weeks to be recrawled and counted.
Expect meaningful movement in three to six months, compounding after that. Anyone promising faster is either buying links or describing something that will not last.
Where to go next
Links are one third of the job. Technical SEO makes sure the site can be crawled and understood, and on-page SEO makes each page worth ranking. Off-page SEO covers the wider signal set that links sit inside.

Do backlinks still matter in 2026?
Yes, but not the way they did a decade ago. A small number of relevant, editorially placed links from sites with real readers outperforms hundreds of directory or network links. The signal shifted from quantity to relevance and legitimacy.
