What changed
The email Barry Schwartz published says eligible products are "automatically included" and "there's nothing for you to set up" — shoppers buy with Google Pay inside AI Mode or Gemini instead of on your site: Search Engine Roundtable's coverage →
Separate the email from the documentation. Google's Merchant Center Help article on UCP-powered checkout frames the Buy button as feed-driven — only listings carrying native_commerce[checkout_eligibility] show it — and says it "only applies to products with eligibility in the United States, Canada, and Australia." Google's developer docs add that you "remain the Merchant of Record" with "full ownership of your customer relationships, data, and the post-purchase experience."
Neither doc we read documents an opt-out. PPC Land reported on 23 September that the switch sits in the Shopify admin under Sales channels › Agentic, and that the rollout hit US-eligible products only — outlet reporting, not a Google statement.
What this means for Indian D2C brands
On India, the docs do not say: no Google page we fetched lists India as eligible, and none rules it out. Watch item, not a to-do.
The upside is real: one-tap Google Pay removes the step where mobile carts die, and you stay merchant of record. The cost is that a checkout you do not control is a customer relationship you do not own — no email capture on your terms, no post-purchase upsell, no clean analytics. Decide before the switch is flipped for you: check your Merchant Center setup and treat this as the agentic search shift it is, which is where our ecommerce SEO work starts.
