Business Not Showing on Google Maps?
If customers can't find you on Maps, you're invisible where it matters most. Here are the real reasons — and the exact fix for each.
Not showing on Maps is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The fix depends on the cause — so work through them in order. For the proactive side of this, see how to rank in Google Maps.
The most common reasons — and how to fix each
Below are the causes we see most often, roughly in the order worth checking them.
| Reason | What's happening | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Unverified profile | Google rarely shows an unverified listing publicly | Complete verification (postcard, phone, email or video) |
| Suspended profile | A policy breach hid the listing | Fix the issue, then request reinstatement |
| Too new | Fresh profiles take days to weeks to surface | Verify, complete every field, then wait it out |
| Proximity | The searcher is too far from your location | Build relevance, reviews and citations to widen reach |
| Incomplete info | Thin profiles rank poorly and may not show | Fill category, hours, services, photos and description |
| Duplicate listings | Two profiles split and confuse your signals | Claim and merge or remove the duplicate |
| Inconsistent NAP | Mismatched details reduce Google's trust | Make name, address and phone identical everywhere |
Step 1: Confirm it's verified — and not suspended
Log in to your Google Business Profile. If you see a prompt to verify, that's almost certainly why nothing shows — an unverified profile usually stays hidden. If instead you see a suspension notice, the listing was removed for a policy reason (often an address issue or a prohibited category). Fix the underlying problem and submit a reinstatement request.
Step 2: Rule out proximity and personalisation
You can often see your own listing when a customer can't, because you're signed in and physically near it. Test in an incognito window, or ask someone across the city to search. If you only vanish for distant searchers, this is a ranking problem, not a visibility bug — you need more relevance, reviews and consistent citations to show further out.
Step 3: Complete the profile fully
A half-filled profile is a weak profile. Set the correct primary category, add services, hours, a real description, and current photos. A complete, active profile is far more likely to surface — the same fundamentals covered in our Google Business Profile optimisation guide.
Step 4: Kill duplicates and fix NAP
- Search for duplicates — look up your business name and phone on Maps; a second pin splits your signals.
- Claim or remove them — merge duplicates into your verified profile so everything points to one listing.
- Standardise your NAP — pick one exact version of your name, address and phone and use it everywhere.
- Fix your citations — correct mismatched directory listings; details are covered in local citations & NAP consistency.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?
The most common reasons are an unverified or suspended Google Business Profile, a listing that is too new, being outside the searcher's proximity, incomplete profile information, duplicate listings, or inconsistent name, address and phone details across the web. Each has a specific fix, and verification is almost always the first thing to check.
How long does it take for a new business to appear on Google Maps?
After you create and verify a Google Business Profile it usually appears within a few days to a couple of weeks. Verification is the gate — an unverified profile often will not show publicly. If it has been more than two weeks after verification and it still is not visible, check for a suspension or a duplicate listing.
Why can I see my business but customers can't?
Usually proximity and personalisation. You see your own listing because you are signed in and standing near it; a customer several kilometres away sees closer competitors first. It can also mean your profile ranks too low to appear in the local pack for that search. Building relevance, reviews and citations helps you show for people further away.
Why did my business disappear from Google Maps?
A listing that was visible and then vanished is usually suspended, merged with a duplicate, or was edited in a way that broke verification. Log in to your Google Business Profile and check for a suspension notice. If it is suspended, fix the policy issue — such as an inaccurate address or prohibited business type — and request reinstatement.
Does a physical address affect showing on Google Maps?
Yes. Google Maps is built around real, verifiable locations. A genuine address you serve customers from, or a defined service area for service-area businesses, is required. Fake, virtual or shared addresses are a common cause of suspension. Your address must also match exactly across your website, directories and profile.
