Telegram marketing: what it is actually good for in India
An owned broadcast list you control, a community you moderate, or a bot that does one job. Everything else on Telegram is someone selling you a shortcut.
Most pages on this topic open by telling you how big Telegram is. The useful question is narrower: does Telegram do a job your other channels cannot?
For most Indian businesses the honest answer is no. For a few — ones with a reason to message the same people again and again — it is the cheapest owned list they will ever build. If you are still mapping out where Telegram would sit against everything else you run, our guide to choosing marketing channels comes first.
Channels, groups and bots: three different products
Telegram is three surfaces, and people lose money by picking the wrong one. What each does, from Telegram's own FAQ:
| Surface | What it is | Who can post | The marketing job it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel | A one-way broadcast feed. Telegram calls channels "a tool for broadcasting messages to large audiences" with an unlimited number of subscribers. | Admins only. Posts are signed with the channel's name, not a person's. Subscribers can suggest posts for review. | Your owned list. Updates, drops, alerts, links — delivered to everyone who subscribed, in order. |
| Group | A two-way chat that holds up to 200,000 members. Admins can restrict who may send messages. | Every member, by default. | A community. Support, peer answers, feedback. Needs real moderation from day one. |
| Bot | "Small programs that run inside Telegram," built by third-party developers on the Bot API. | Not applicable — it responds to commands. | One repeatable task: order status, a quiz, a booking, a file on request. |
If you want conversation, you want a group — and running one well is a skill in itself, which our community management guide covers properly. If you want to publish to people who asked to hear from you, you want a channel. That is the case most businesses are actually looking at, so the rest of this page leans that way.
Retention channel, not reach.
Why a Telegram channel is an owned audience, not a rented one
A social feed decides who sees your post. A Telegram channel does not. Every post lands in the chat list of every subscriber, in the order you sent it, unless they mute you or leave.
That is the whole appeal. It is the same structural advantage an email list has: slow to build, hard to take away. Our newsletter marketing piece makes the same argument with email.
The limit nobody tells you: Telegram is a retention channel
A channel cannot find you new people. There is no discovery feed pushing your posts to strangers, no hashtag surface, no algorithm hunting for interest.
Every subscriber you get, you brought — from your site, your Instagram bio, your invoices, your packaging, your WhatsApp. Telegram holds the relationship; it does not source it.
So judge it as a retention tool: repeat opens, clicks per post, and how many subscribers are still there in six months — the same lens our customer retention guide applies elsewhere. Measure a Telegram channel on new-customer acquisition and no amount of posting will fix the result.
What Telegram Ads actually let you do — and the catch
Telegram does sell ads, and you can sign up yourself: the Telegram Ad Platform asks only for a Telegram account and a phone number. No agency gatekeeper. Then the constraints arrive.
- No link to your website. Telegram's own documentation states that "all links included in the Text and URL field must link to a channel or bot on Telegram" and that "links to external sites are not allowed." This is the single most important fact on the page.
- 160 characters, text only. The ad guidelines cap ad text at 160 characters including spaces, plus one button. No image, no video, no carousel.
- Placement is in channels, not feeds. Ads "are displayed in public channels with 1000+ subscribers," and you pick those channels by entering each one's link.
- Priced in cryptocurrency. Minimum CPM is 0.1 Toncoin. Telegram's 31 March 2024 announcement described budgets as low as "a handful of Toncoins," and shares 50% of ad revenue with channel owners who have at least 1,000 subscribers.
- Money in does not come back out. The platform terms say an unspent balance "cannot be withdrawn by the Advertiser, transferred to a different Account, or refunded," and is forfeited after three years of continuous inactivity.
Read that as an Indian advertiser. The barrier is not cost — it is low. It is that you cannot send anyone to your website, you must fund the account in a digital asset your finance team has to account for, and whatever you deposit is spent on Telegram or lost.
Which means Telegram Ads has exactly one sensible use: buying subscribers for a Telegram channel or users for a Telegram bot. It is not a performance channel. If your objective is a form fill or a sale on your own site, this platform cannot do it, and anyone quoting you a cost per lead on it is quoting you something else.
Also check the prohibited list before you plan anything. The guidelines rule out gambling, political ads, religion and sensitive topics, "deceptive or harmful financial products or services," and "uncertified medical services, medications, and supplements." Several categories that are big on Indian Telegram cannot legally advertise on it.
Who is actually on Telegram in India, and why it skews what works
We will not quote you a user number, because the figures circulating for India are aggregator estimates rather than anything Telegram publishes.
What is on the record is more useful anyway. In March 2026 India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting ordered Telegram to remove over 3,100 channels carrying more than 1,100 pirated titles, under the IT Act, with a three-hour compliance window.
That order tells you the shape of the platform here. Telegram's Indian pull has been large-file sharing and closed-group content — piracy, study material, exam prep, job alerts, trading tips, deal channels. People arrive looking for files and signals, not brands.
Three consequences follow.
- It works best for information products. Education, upskilling, market commentary, software, developer tools, anything where a subscriber genuinely wants the next update.
- It works badly for considered local purchases. A clinic, a salon, a dealership or a restaurant will reach its people faster almost anywhere else.
- Language matters more than usual. These are self-selected interest communities, and the ad guidelines also expect your ad's language to match the channel's. Our piece on vernacular marketing in India is worth reading before you plan content for one.
One more honest note: that same regulatory heat is a brand-safety consideration. Buying placements inside channels you did not vet puts your name next to whatever else is in them. If you are going to be here, listen to what is being said in the relevant communities first.
Telegram versus WhatsApp, described plainly
These get compared constantly, and they are not the same kind of tool.
WhatsApp is permissioned one-to-one messaging: people opt in individually, business sending runs through approved templates, and it costs money per message or conversation. Our WhatsApp marketing guide covers how that works, and whether you need the Business API behind it is a separate decision again.
A Telegram channel is the opposite trade. Broadcasting is free, unlimited and template-free — but nobody is added to it, and you cannot message subscribers individually at scale.
So the question is not which is better. It is whether you need one-to-one messaging or a free owned broadcast list. Plenty of businesses need the first and not the second.
Do not do this: scraped contacts and bulk adding
There is a grey market selling Telegram "growth" in India: scraped member lists, tools that bulk-add phone numbers to your group, bought subscribers. Skip all of it.
- It is unsolicited messaging. Adding someone who never asked is spam, whatever the tool calls it.
- It gets you reported and limited. Spam reports are the one thing Telegram acts on quickly, and a limited account cannot message anyone.
- Bought subscribers break your only honest metric. A channel's value is that everyone there chose to be there. Inflate the number and you have destroyed the signal you built it for.
- It costs you credibility with the people you wanted. A real prospect who sees they were added without asking does not simply leave quietly.
Grow it slowly, from surfaces you already own. It is the only version that compounds.
The minimum viable test — and when to skip it entirely
If you have passed the two questions above, this is the smallest honest experiment.
1. Commit to a 90-day posting plan before you create anything. Twelve posts minimum, written in advance. If you cannot fill it, stop here — you have your answer.
2. Create one public channel, not a group. Proper name, profile image, a description that says exactly what subscribers get and how often.
3. Promote it only from owned surfaces. Site footer, Instagram bio, order confirmations, email signature. No paid, no bought growth.
4. Post consistently for the full 90 days and watch per-post views, link clicks and unsubscribes. Telegram shows a view counter on every channel post.
5. Judge it on one question: did subscribers do something they would not have done otherwise? If not, archive it and spend the time on a channel that paid.
Skip Telegram entirely if any of these is true: you have nothing to send twice a month, your audience is local walk-in trade, your objective is website conversions and you hoped ads would deliver them, or nobody can post reliably for three months. Those four cover most businesses that ask us about it.
Worth knowing if you work with partners: because Telegram pays channel owners 50% of ad revenue on channels above 1,000 subscribers, there is now a genuine incentive for independent operators to build audiences here. Sponsoring an established channel is often the more sensible route than building your own — the same logic that runs through the creator economy.
What owning the list gives you later
The reason to take Telegram seriously is not its size. It is that a channel is one of very few audiences you can build that no ranking, feed or bidding change can take away from you.
That is worth real effort — if you have something to say every fortnight. For everyone else, the most profitable decision on this page is to close the tab.
Frequently asked questions
Is Telegram marketing worth it for a small business in India?
Only if you have something to send the same people at least twice a month and you can bring subscribers from surfaces you already own. A Telegram channel cannot find new customers for you. For a local walk-in business, or anyone hoping Telegram will drive website sales, the time is better spent elsewhere.
Should I use a Telegram channel or a Telegram group for business?
A channel if you want to publish. Only admins post, subscribers are unlimited, and every post reaches everyone who subscribed. A group if you want conversation — members post by default and it holds up to 200,000 people, but it needs active moderation from the first day or it fills with spam.
Can Telegram Ads send traffic to my website?
No. Telegram's own ad documentation states that all links in the text and URL field must point to a channel or bot on Telegram, and that links to external sites are not allowed. Telegram Ads can only grow a Telegram destination, which is why it is not a performance channel.
How much do Telegram Ads cost?
Telegram publishes a minimum CPM of 0.1 Toncoin and described budgets as low as a handful of Toncoins in its March 2024 announcement. Actual cost depends on the channels you select, so no honest rate card exists. Note that unspent balance cannot be withdrawn or refunded under the platform terms.
Telegram or WhatsApp for business messaging?
Different tools. WhatsApp is permissioned one-to-one messaging with approved templates and a per-message cost. A Telegram channel is free, unlimited broadcasting to people who chose to subscribe, with no individual messaging at scale. Pick on whether you need direct conversations or an owned publishing list.
