What a Website Actually Costs in India (2026)

Every other page on this query opens with an invented average. This one does not. Here is what really decides the number.

Quick answer: There is no honest average price for a website in India, because the same one-line brief can mean five days of work or five months. What decides your number is the count of unique page templates, how many systems have to talk to each other, who writes the content, and whether an existing site has to be migrated without losing rankings.

We are a digital marketing agency. We do not build websites and we do not quote them.

We wrote this page because we are the ones who get the site afterwards — and are then asked why it will not rank. Half of that answer was decided during the build, long before anyone thought about search.

So this is the buyer's guide we wish our clients had read before they signed.

Why nobody will give you a real number on the phone

Because "a website for my company" is not a specification. It is a category.

Two businesses ask for the same thing. One needs six pages, a contact form and no login. The other needs six pages, a product catalogue, a payment gateway, a customer dashboard and a feed from their inventory system.

Same sentence. Twenty times the work.

A developer who quotes you inside ten minutes has priced the first version and will discover the second one in week three. That is where "scope creep" comes from, and it is usually the buyer's brief that caused it, not the developer's greed.

The practical version: if you want a quote you can hold someone to, you have to hand over a specification. The checklist further down is that specification.

What actually decides the number

Five variables move a website quote more than anything else. Everything else is rounding.

VariableThe cheap endThe expensive end
Unique page templates4–6 layouts, everything else reuses them15+ layouts, each designed and built separately
IntegrationsA contact form that sends an emailPayments, CRM, ERP, inventory, booking, logins
ContentYou supply final copy and imagesSomeone has to research and write every page
Design originA configured theme, lightly customisedOriginal design, then built from scratch
MigrationNew domain, nothing to preserveReplacing a site that already has rankings

Templates are the lever most buyers miss. A twenty-page site with five layouts is a small job. A twenty-page site where every page is bespoke is a large one. The page count barely matters; the layout count is what gets built.

Which part of the quote is actually the big one

Not the design. Almost never the design.

Design is the part you can see, so buyers assume it dominates the cost. In practice the two lines that grow fastest are integrations and content.

  • Integrations are engineering, not decoration. A payment gateway has to handle failures, refunds and reconciliation. A CRM connection has to survive the CRM changing its API. This is the work that runs long.
  • Content is the line everyone forgets to price. Somebody has to write forty pages. If that somebody is not you, it is a paid engagement — and in the Indian market, content work sits in the ₹25,000–₹1,50,000 a month range depending on volume and depth.
  • Design is real work, but it is bounded. Once the templates are agreed, it stops.

If a quote is heavy on design and light on content and integrations, it is not a cheap quote. It is an incomplete one.

Template site or custom build?

The honest answer for most Indian SMEs is: a well-configured template, and spend the difference on content.

Search engines do not inspect the origin of your theme. They read what the site outputs — headings, load speed, crawlable links, editable titles, sensible URLs. A tidy template site beats a slow custom build on every one of those.

Choose a template when…Choose a custom build when…
Your site is mostly informationalThe site is the product
You need to launch this quarterYou have a genuinely unusual workflow
Your differentiator is the offer, not the interfaceYour differentiator is the interface
You want to edit pages without a developerYou have in-house engineering to maintain it

The failure mode to avoid is the middle: a template buried under a dozen page-builder plugins until it loads like a custom build and edits like neither. That combination is where Core Web Vitals go to die.

The four costs that are not in the quote

These are the ones that surprise people six months later.

  1. Hosting, domain and certificates. Small, annual, and easy to forget until the renewal invoice lands. Fine — just know it exists.
  2. Maintenance. Plugins update. Plugins break. Someone has to patch security holes. A site with no maintenance owner is a site that will one day be down and nobody's job to fix.
  3. Content, forever. The build gives you a website. It does not give you anything to say next month.
  4. The SEO migration. This is the expensive one. If you already have a site with rankings and you replace it without mapping the old URLs to the new ones, you can lose most of your organic visibility on launch day. Rebuilding that costs multiples of what the redirects would have cost.
The one line to put in your contract: "A 301 redirect map from every existing URL to its new equivalent, delivered and tested before go-live." It costs a developer a few hours. Skipping it has cost businesses their entire organic channel. If you want the detail, our technical SEO guide covers what a safe migration checks.

What to put in the brief before you ask for a quote

Hand a developer this and you will get comparable quotes instead of five numbers you cannot line up against each other.

  1. Page inventory. Every page, grouped by layout. Mark which ones share a template.
  2. Integration list. Every external system, named. Payment gateway, CRM, WhatsApp, analytics, inventory, booking.
  3. Content owner. Who writes each page, and by when. Put a name against it.
  4. Editing expectations. Which parts you must be able to change yourself without calling anyone.
  5. Existing URLs. If a site exists, export the full URL list and require a redirect map.
  6. SEO basics. Editable title tags and meta descriptions per page, clean heading structure, a working XML sitemap, and no accidental noindex on launch. Our on-page SEO guide is the fuller list, and the SERP snippet preview tool shows how those titles will actually appear.
  7. Speed target. Name a number. "Fast" is not a requirement.

Seven lines. It is the difference between a quote and a hope.

How the website cost relates to what comes after

A build is a one-time cost. Getting found is a recurring one, and they are not the same budget.

In the Indian market, ongoing SEO work sits roughly in the ₹25,000–₹1,50,000 a month range depending on scope and competition — we break that down properly in what SEO costs in India. Retainer structures across channels are covered in our digital marketing packages explainer.

The trap is spending the entire budget on the build and having nothing left to fill it. A beautiful site nobody visits is the most expensive kind of website there is.

Where to go from here

Write the seven-line brief. Get three quotes against it. Compare what is in each one rather than what is at the bottom of each one.

And before you sign, get the SEO requirements written into the developer's scope — not added afterwards, when changing them means changing the build.

Key takeaways: There is no honest average, because the brief is what sets the price — layouts, integrations, content ownership and migration, in that order. Design is rarely the biggest line. The four costs outside the quote are hosting, maintenance, content and the SEO migration, and only the last one can wipe out an existing business overnight.

Frequently asked questions

Why will nobody quote a website price over the phone?

Because the same brief can mean five days of work or five months. Until a developer knows how many unique page templates you need, what has to connect to what, and who is writing the content, any number they give you is a guess they will later revise. A quote that arrives in ten minutes is usually priced for the easy version of your project.

Is a template site worse for SEO than a custom build?

Not inherently. Search engines do not check whether your theme was bought or written. What matters is what the build outputs: clean headings, fast loading, crawlable links, editable titles and descriptions, and sensible URLs. A well-configured template site beats a slow custom build every time. A bloated template loaded with page-builder plugins loses to both.

What is usually the most expensive part of a website build?

Rarely the design. On most projects the biggest line items are integrations and content. Connecting a payment gateway, a CRM, an inventory system or a booking engine takes real engineering time, and someone still has to write every page. Design is visible, so buyers assume it dominates the quote. It usually does not.

What costs do website quotes normally leave out?

Four, in our experience: hosting and domain renewals, ongoing maintenance and security updates, the content itself, and the SEO migration if you are replacing an existing site. The first three are predictable. The fourth is the one that hurts, because losing rankings on launch day costs far more than the build did.

Does Digital Hangover build websites?

No. We are a digital marketing agency, not a development shop, and we do not quote website builds. We wrote this page because we inherit these sites afterwards and have to make them rank. If you want the SEO requirements written into your developer's scope before you sign, that is something we can help with.

Before you sign the build

Get the SEO spec into the scope

Redirect maps, editable metadata and a speed target cost almost nothing at brief stage — and a fortune afterwards.
