Zomato ads for restaurants: what you buy and the honest maths

What is actually on sale, who controls your position in the list, and whether paid visibility pays once commission and discounts are counted.

Quick answer: This page is for restaurant owners who want to advertise on Zomato, not for diners or jobseekers. Zomato sells paid visibility to its restaurant partners through a Sponsored Listing Service, billed per click and bought inside the Restaurant Partner app. Whether it pays depends almost entirely on how many clicks each extra order takes.

If you came here to order food or to find a job, this is the wrong page. This one is for the person who pays the bill: an owner deciding whether money goes into Zomato ads this month.

Zomato ads are one line in a bigger plan. If you have not mapped the rest, read our guide to restaurant digital marketing in India first, then come back for the marketplace piece. The other large aggregator is covered separately in Swiggy ads — this page stays Zomato-only.

One naming point, because it trips people up. Zomato Limited renamed itself Eternal Limited, announced on 6 February 2025 (TechCrunch, 6 Feb 2025). The listed company is Eternal; the app you advertise on is still Zomato. Food delivery is still reported as its own segment — ₹3,100 crore of revenue in the June 2026 quarter, up 37% year on year (IndiaInfoline, 23 Jul 2026). Ad income sits inside that line, and we found no separate restaurant-advertising revenue figure in Eternal's disclosures — so nobody outside the company can size this market precisely.

What you can actually buy

Start with Zomato's own paperwork, not a blog. Eternal publishes the terms of its Sponsored Listing Service. That page carries no publication date, so treat it as current-as-accessed (19 October 2026) and re-read it before signing.

What those terms establish, in plain English:

  • You buy an advertisement displayed on the Zomato website and app to publicise your restaurant.
  • You are billed on a cost-per-click (CPC) basis, at a rate written into the service request form.
  • The fee is deducted from your weekly payout, not invoiced separately.
  • You are not charged above the agreed campaign budget for the dates in the form unless you agree in writing.
  • Zomato gives no guarantee of a minimum number of clicks.
  • Fees paid are generally not refundable, and Zomato's liability is capped at the fee it received.
  • You can opt out with 30 days' notice.

The buying route is the partner side, not a self-serve ads manager like Google's. Zomato's own description of the Restaurant Partner app says you can create ads, promote dishes, boost visibility and track how promotions perform — alongside order management, stock updates and business reports. In practice an account manager is usually involved too, and the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) notes that Zomato uses an OTP-verified contract for each ad spend (Storyboard18, 13 Nov 2025).

Beyond sponsored listings, restaurant owners interviewed by MediaNama described category-level ads and audience-targeted boosts suggested in the dashboard (MediaNama, 5 Jun 2025). Those are owner accounts, not a published product list. This category changes often — ask your account manager what is live in your city this quarter, and never assume a format you read about last year still exists.

Who decides where your ad shows

This is the clause most owners skip. Under the Sponsored Listing terms, Zomato decides the size, placement and positioning of your advertisement at its sole discretion. You buy entry into an auction for attention, not a fixed slot.

In practice your paid impression lands where a hungry user already looks:

  • The home feed and curated collections.
  • Search results for a dish or a cuisine.
  • Listing rows sitting between organic results.

You do not control which, and you cannot buy a guaranteed first position.

That is normal for marketplace advertising; the same auction logic runs across grocery and fashion platforms, which we cover in retail media. It just means the lever is softer than the dashboard makes it look.

Ads are one of four levers, and usually the dearest

Here is the structural point. On a food-delivery marketplace you are not buying a customer. You are buying position in a list where the user compares four things at a glance: your rating, your delivery time, your discount, and whether you appear at all.

Ads only move the fourth. The other three are often cheaper to improve and they compound.

LeverWhat it changesWhat it costs youHow fast
RatingClick-through at every position, paid and organicOperations time, packaging fixes, replying to reviewsSlow — weeks of clean orders

DiscountConversion once seenDirect margin, per order, foreverImmediate

Visibility matters more for some restaurants than others. NRAI's Pranav M Rungta has said roughly 30% of restaurants receive 75–80% of orders, leaving everyone else leaning on paid visibility (Storyboard18, 13 Nov 2025). In that long tail, ads are a real lever. At a 3.6 rating and 42-minute prep time, they are an expensive way to show a weak listing to more people.

Working through the maths: what an advertised order leaves you

Run this on your own numbers. Every input below is a stated assumption, not a Zomato rate card, and the answer changes when you change them.

Assumptions. Order value ₹500. You fund a 15% discount. Commission 25% of the post-discount value — that is the rate NRAI says platforms advertise, and real contracts vary by city, category and volume (Storyboard18, 13 Nov 2025). GST at 18% on the commission. Food cost 30% of menu price. Packaging ₹20. CPC ₹8, the mid-point of a ₹5–₹15 range published as an estimate by Restaurant India (5 May 2026) — your contracted rate will differ.

Line (hypothetical)Amount
Menu price of the order₹500
Discount you fund (15%)−₹75
Commission (25% of ₹425)−₹106
GST on commission (18%)−₹19
Food cost (30% of ₹500)−₹150
Packaging−₹20
Contribution before ad spend₹130

Now the only question that matters: how many clicks does one extra order take?

  • ₹130 of contribution ÷ ₹8 a click = 16 clicks. That is your break-even.
  • At 10 clicks per order, ad cost is ₹80 and you keep ₹50.
  • At 16 clicks, you keep nothing and have worked for free.
  • At 25 clicks, ad cost is ₹200 and the order loses you ₹70.

Two things make it harsher. You pay for the click even when the user would have ordered from you anyway, so part of the spend buys orders you already had. And if you deepen the discount to lift conversion, the ₹130 shrinks and the break-even falls with it. Pair this with customer lifetime value — a repeat customer changes the verdict on the first order entirely.

Fix these before you buy a click

All of this raises conversion on clicks you already pay for. Do it first.

  1. Menu photography. Shoot your top 10 items properly. One photo set lifts every impression you ever buy.
  2. Item naming. Name dishes the way people search them. "Paneer Butter Masala" finds searches; "Chef's Special No. 4" does not.
  3. Rating recovery. Work the complaint reasons, not the score. The same discipline we describe in getting more Google reviews applies here.
  4. Prep time. Cut the two dishes that blow your kitchen's timing. Delivery estimate is a ranking and conversion input.
  5. Menu structure. Put the profitable items where a scrolling user sees them, and kill the dead SKUs that slow you down.

When Zomato ads are not the answer

Say this out loud before the budget is approved. Ads are the wrong first move when:

  • Your rating is below about 4.0. You would be paying to show a listing people are choosing not to click.
  • Your contribution per order is already thin or negative. More orders then lose more money, faster.
  • You are a single outlet with a strong neighbourhood pull. Hyperlocal marketing and a well-kept Google Business Profile usually cost less per order than marketplace clicks — see local SEO for small business.
  • Your kitchen cannot take the volume. Buying demand you cannot serve damages the rating that drives everything else.
  • You have no way to tell ad-driven orders from the rest. Then you are not buying growth, you are buying a number.

How we sequence owned channels against marketplace spend

This section is Digital Hangover's own view, from how we plan restaurant accounts — not a published benchmark, and not a client result.

We treat marketplace ads as the last thing switched on, and the first thing switched off. The order we work in:

  1. Listing quality on the marketplace. Photos, names, prep time, review replies. Free, and it raises the return on every later rupee.
  2. Owned local discovery. Google Business Profile, reviews, directions and calls. These orders carry no commission.
  3. Direct ordering and repeat. A simple own-channel order route and a reason to come back. This is where lifetime value is actually captured.
  4. Marketplace ads, last. Bought with a clicks-per-order break-even already written down, against defined windows — a new outlet's first weeks, a weak weekday, a festival peak.

Our rule: every marketplace budget gets a fixed test period and a stated break-even, agreed before it starts. If clicks per order sits above break-even for two full weeks, the spend pauses and we return to step one. Marketplace ads are rented demand; owned channels are the only part you keep. On buying decisions generally, see media buying and the performance marketing guide.

What the reporting gives you, and what it does not

Under the Sponsored Listing terms, Zomato provides a partner dashboard for tracking clicks, a weekly auto-generated report by email, and a weekly statement of account. The terms also define a return-on-investment measure as advertisement-attributed order value divided by advertisement spend.

What owners and the trade body say is missing is the layer underneath. NRAI's Rungta told Storyboard18 there is "no transparency in how ad spends are consumed or what the return on ad spend is", adding: "If you budget one lakh rupees, there is no visibility into how that money was used" (13 Nov 2025). Owners quoted by MediaNama said the dashboard does not show which customers arrived through ads (5 Jun 2025).

So build your own record. Three habits cover most of it:

  • Log weekly ad spend, clicks and total orders in a sheet, and compute clicks per order yourself.
  • Hold rating, prep time and discount roughly steady during a test, so the ad is the only thing changing.
  • Compare an ads-on week against an ads-off week in the same outlet. It is crude, but it is the only incrementality read you control. More on the logic in marketing attribution.

Where your next ₹10,000 goes further

Zomato ads are a real tool, and for a new outlet or a long-tail listing sometimes the only way to get seen. They are simply the dearest of the four levers, and the only one that stops the day you stop paying.

So earn the click first, then buy it. Good photos, honest item names, a 4.3 rating and a 28-minute prep time convert paid clicks far better than the same kitchen without them — so the same budget buys more orders. The work that makes ads affordable is work you had to do anyway.

Key takeaways: Zomato ads are sold per click under Eternal's Sponsored Listing Service, bought through the Restaurant Partner app, with placement at Zomato's discretion and fees deducted from your weekly payout. Write down your contribution per order, divide it by your CPC, and you have a clicks-per-order break-even. Fix photos, names, rating and prep time before you spend, because they decide what every click is worth.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Zomato ads cost in India?

Zomato does not publish a public rate card. Its Sponsored Listing terms say you are billed per click at a CPC written into your service request form, within an agreed campaign budget. Restaurant India published an estimated ₹5–₹15 per click range on 5 May 2026, which is a trade estimate, not a Zomato rate.

Where do I buy Zomato ads?

Through the partner side, not a public ads manager. Zomato's own description of the Restaurant Partner app says you can create ads, promote dishes and track how promotions perform. An account manager is usually involved, and NRAI notes Zomato uses an OTP-verified contract for each ad spend.

Can I guarantee the top position in Zomato search results?

No. Under Eternal's Sponsored Listing terms, Zomato decides the size, placement and positioning of the advertisement at its sole discretion, and gives no guarantee of a minimum number of clicks. You are entering an auction for attention, not buying a fixed slot.

Are Zomato ads worth it for a small restaurant?

It depends on one number: clicks per incremental order. Work out your contribution per order after discount, commission, GST, food cost and packaging, then divide by your CPC. That is your break-even click count. If your actual clicks per order sits above it, the spend is losing money.

Is Zomato still called Zomato?

The app is. The parent company renamed itself Eternal Limited, announced on 6 February 2025, and food delivery is still reported as a separate segment under the Zomato brand. If you are reading investor filings, look for Eternal; if you are advertising, you are still advertising on Zomato.

Spend with a break-even
