This page is part of our Conversion Rate Optimization: The Complete Guide. If you haven't read the fundamentals yet, start there — this page assumes you already know what a hypothesis and a conversion event are.
There's no single "best" CRO tool. There's a right tool for the job you're trying to do this month.
A heatmap tool won't tell you if a change actually worked. An A/B testing platform won't tell you why people are dropping off a form. Most sites that do CRO well use two or three tools, not one do-everything platform.
Below, we've grouped real, currently operating tools by category, described what each is actually good for, and pulled pricing directly from official sources where a specific number is published. Where a vendor doesn't publish a price — several don't — we say so honestly instead of guessing.
Heatmap and session recording tools
Heatmap and session-recording tools show you where people click, how far they scroll, and where they get stuck. This is the "what's happening" layer — it doesn't run experiments, but it tells you what's worth testing.
Microsoft Clarity is completely free, with no usage cap on session recordings or heatmaps. It covers scroll and click heatmaps, session replay, and rage-click detection, and it connects to Google Analytics. The honest trade-off: Microsoft uses the aggregated data to improve its own products, including its AI tools. For most small and mid-sized sites, that trade-off is worth it — there's genuinely no reason not to have Clarity running before you spend on anything else.
Hotjar covers heatmaps, session recordings, and on-site surveys in one product. As of July 2025, Hotjar is part of Contentsquare — the two companies merged, and Hotjar's pricing page now redirects to Contentsquare's. Hotjar still runs a free plan alongside paid Growth, Pro, and Enterprise tiers, but current dollar pricing isn't published in a stable, citable way post-merger — check contentsquare.com/pricing directly before budgeting.
Crazy Egg pairs heatmaps and scrollmaps with a simple built-in A/B testing tool, aimed at marketing teams who don't want to run two separate products. Its published pricing (billed annually) is: Starter at $29/month, Plus at $99/month, Pro at $249/month, and Enterprise at $599/month, each with a 30-day free trial. Crazy Egg also offers a limited permanent free plan with basic heatmaps and analytics.
FullStory is built for product and engineering teams who want session replay tied to deeper product analytics — not just marketing heatmaps. It's a heavier tool than the others here, and its pricing is not publicly listed; you'll need to talk to sales for a quote.
For more on what these tools actually show you — and the common ways people misread a heatmap — see our guide, Heatmap Tools: What They Show and How to Read Them.
A/B testing and experimentation platforms
A/B testing platforms are what actually change the outcome. They split real traffic between two or more versions of a page and measure which one converts better — not just watch what happened, but prove which change caused it.
If you're used to Google Optimize, it's no longer an option. Google shut it down in September 2023, and most teams that relied on it moved to VWO, Optimizely, or Convert.com instead.
VWO (Visual Website Optimizer) is a full experimentation suite covering A/B testing, multivariate testing, and server-side testing. It runs a genuine free "Explore for Free" tier alongside paid Growth, Pro, and Enterprise plans. VWO doesn't publish specific dollar amounts on its pricing page — you request a quote based on your traffic — so check current pricing directly before budgeting.
Optimizely is an enterprise-grade experimentation platform, popular with larger product and engineering teams that want experiments and feature flags in one system. Pricing is entirely quote-based; there is no published self-serve price, so contact sales for a number relevant to your traffic and team size.
Convert.com (Convert Experiences) is built for privacy-conscious, agency, and mid-market testing. Its pricing is publicly listed and specific: the Growth plan is $299/month billed annually (or $399/month billed monthly) for up to 100,000 tested users a month; the Pro plan is $420/month billed annually (or $599/month billed monthly); Enterprise is custom-priced for higher traffic. Both self-serve plans include a 15-day free trial with no credit card required.
Before you commit to a full testing platform, it's worth sanity-checking a result yourself. Our free CTR calculator tells you whether a difference between two versions is statistically significant or just noise — a useful gut-check on a small test before you invest in tooling built for much larger sample sizes.
For the mechanics of running a valid test — sample size, test duration, and what statistical significance actually means — see A/B Testing: The Complete Guide.
Landing page and experience-building tools
Landing page builders don't just build pages — the better ones let a marketer spin up and test variants without waiting on a developer, which matters when speed is the whole point of testing.
Unbounce is a landing-page builder with AI-assisted copy tools and built-in conversion features, popular with PPC-heavy performance teams that need to launch and test campaign pages fast.
Instapage covers similar ground with a heavier focus on post-click personalisation — showing different landing-page content depending on which ad someone clicked.
Neither Unbounce nor Instapage currently publishes a stable, citable self-serve price list — both route new customers through a demo or a quote — so check their sites directly for current plans before you budget for either.
Form analytics tools
Forms are usually the last mile before a conversion, and the part most CRO audits skip. Form analytics tools show you exactly which field made someone give up.
Zuko Analytics (formerly Formisimo) is a dedicated form-analytics tool — field-by-field drop-off, time spent per field, and device-level breakdowns of where people abandon a form. It's a paid product with tiered plans; check zuko.io for current pricing.
You may not need a dedicated form tool right away. Several of the heatmap tools above — Hotjar in particular — bundle basic form analytics into their main plans, which is often enough until your forms are complex enough to need field-level detail.
Survey and feedback tools
Heatmaps show you what happened. Surveys tell you why — closing the gap between behaviour data and the actual reason someone didn't convert.
Hotjar's Surveys and Feedback tools let you run on-site polls, exit-intent surveys, and open-text feedback widgets, bundled into Hotjar's existing plans rather than sold separately.
Qualaroo is a dedicated survey tool built around targeted, trigger-based on-page "nudges" — for example, a question that only appears when someone scrolls 80% down a pricing page, or tries to leave via exit-intent. It's a paid product; check qualaroo.com for current plans.

How to pick without overbuying
Most sites don't need five tools. They need the two or three that answer the question they're actually stuck on.
- If you have no behavioural data at all — install Microsoft Clarity today. It's free, and it will tell you where to look next.
- If you already know what to fix but haven't proven it — that's when an A/B testing platform earns its cost. Don't buy one before you have a hypothesis to test.
- If your bottleneck is a specific form — a dedicated form-analytics tool is worth it only once a heatmap tool has already told you the form is the problem.
- If you don't know why, not just what — add a survey tool. Numbers tell you where people leave; a survey tells you why they left.
If you'd rather have this decided and run for you — which tools, what to test first, and how to read the results — that's what our conversion rate optimisation service does. We scope tool selection as part of the engagement rather than billing it separately.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a paid tool to start CRO?
No. Microsoft Clarity is genuinely free, with no usage cap, and it covers heatmaps and session recordings — the two things most sites need first. You can run a real CRO process on free tools alone until you have a specific hypothesis that needs a paid A/B testing platform to prove.
What's the difference between a heatmap tool and an A/B testing tool?
A heatmap tool shows you what's already happening on your current page — clicks, scroll depth, session replays. It's observational. An A/B testing platform runs a controlled experiment: it splits real traffic between two versions of a page and tells you which one actually performs better. You typically use a heatmap tool to find what to test, then an A/B testing platform to test it.
How many tools do I actually need?
For most small and mid-sized sites, two is enough to start: a free heatmap/recording tool (Microsoft Clarity) and, once you have a hypothesis worth testing, one A/B testing platform. Add a form-analytics or survey tool only when a specific problem — a leaky form, or an unclear reason for drop-off — needs one.
Is Google Optimize still available?
No. Google sunset Google Optimize and Optimize 360 in September 2023. If you're planning a CRO stack today, don't include it — most former Optimize users moved to VWO, Optimizely, or Convert.com.
Is Hotjar still called Hotjar?
The Hotjar product still exists under that name, but the company was acquired by and merged into Contentsquare, effective 1 July 2025. Billing, invoicing, and the pricing page now run through Contentsquare, so if you're evaluating Hotjar, check current pricing and plans on Contentsquare's site rather than relying on older Hotjar-only pricing you might find elsewhere.
Want us to pick the tools and run the tests?
We scope CRO engagements from ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000+ a month depending on traffic and testing volume — tool selection and setup included, not billed as an extra.
