Conversion Rate

The share of people who did what you wanted — and why the number is meaningless until you know what is in the denominator.

By the Digital Hangover team · Updated August 2026 · 7 min read
Quick answer: Conversion rate is the percentage of people who complete the action you wanted. Divide conversions by the total, then multiply by a hundred. The number itself means nothing without two pieces of context: what counts as a conversion, and what is in the denominator. Change either and the rate changes without anything improving.

Conversion rate is the easiest metric in marketing to improve dishonestly.

Narrow the denominator and the percentage climbs. Nothing about the business changed.

This is one entry in our performance marketing guide. It covers the formula, the two pieces of context that make it meaningful, and how to genuinely move it.

What is conversion rate?

Conversion rate = (conversions ÷ total) × 100

1,000 clicks and 25 form fills is a 2.5% conversion rate.

Simple — until you ask two questions the formula hides.

The two questions that decide what the number means

First: what counts as a conversion?

A purchase, a form fill, a phone call, a WhatsApp message, a brochure download, a newsletter signup. These are not equivalent, and an account that counts newsletter signups will report a beautiful rate that means almost nothing commercially.

Second: what is in the denominator?

DenominatorWhat you are measuringWho should use it
Ad clicksWhether the landing page delivers on the adThe person running the ads
All sessionsWhether the site converts across every channelMarketing lead
Unique usersWhether people convert, rather than visits convertingAnyone with long sales cycles
Qualified sessions onlyA narrower, flattering sliceNobody, unless the exclusion is disclosed
Before you accept any conversion rate — from an agency, a dashboard or a case study — ask what is being counted and what it is being divided by. Two accounts reporting 4% can be describing completely different businesses.

What is a good conversion rate in India?

We are not going to give you a number, because there is not an honest one.

Conversion rate varies by industry, price point, sales cycle, traffic source and what counts as a conversion. A high-value B2B enquiry form and a ₹499 D2C checkout are not comparable, and a global average across both is arithmetic without meaning.

What is actionable is your own trend and your own segments:

  • Branded versus non-branded traffic. Brand traffic converts far better. If your overall rate is flattered by brand, you are not learning anything about acquisition.
  • Mobile versus desktop. In India, most paid traffic is mobile, and a mobile rate well below desktop usually means a form or a page-speed problem.
  • New versus returning. Returning visitors convert better. A rate that only improves because of remarketing is not a landing page improvement.

We are publishing India conversion benchmarks from accounts we run rather than repeating global figures. Until that is live, segment your own data — it is more useful anyway.

How to actually improve conversion rate

  1. Close the promise gap first. The single most common cause of a poor rate is an ad promising something the page does not repeat. Match the headline to the ad, in the same words, above the fold.
  2. Fix mobile speed. Most Indian paid traffic is mobile and impatient. This is usually the largest single technical gain available.
  3. Cut form fields. Every field costs completions. Ask for what sales genuinely needs to make first contact and nothing else.
  4. Offer the channel people actually use. WhatsApp and call buttons frequently outperform forms in the Indian market. Test it rather than assuming.
  5. Improve traffic quality, not just the page. Negative keywords raise conversion rate by removing people who were never going to convert.
  6. Change one thing at a time. Otherwise you learn that something worked, but not what.

Conversion rate is half of an equation

On its own it is a vanity number. Paired, it becomes diagnostic:

  • With CTR — high CTR and low conversion rate is a promise problem, not a traffic problem.
  • With CPA — conversion rate is what moves CPA when you cannot move bids.
  • With cost per lead and lead quality — a rising conversion rate with falling lead quality is not a win.
Key takeaways: Conversion rate is conversions divided by a total you chose. Always establish what counts and what it is divided by before you interpret it. Segment by brand, device and visitor type rather than reading one blended figure. And improve it by closing the gap between what the ad promised and what the page delivers — that is where most of the loss is.

Where to go next

Conversion tracking is what makes any of these numbers trustworthy, and it should come before optimisation. CPA is where conversion rate shows up in your costs, and ROAS is where it shows up in revenue.

Frequently asked questions

What is conversion rate?

Conversion rate is the percentage of people who complete the action you wanted. Divide conversions by the relevant total and multiply by one hundred. A thousand ad clicks producing twenty-five form fills is a conversion rate of two and a half percent.

How do you calculate conversion rate?

Divide the number of conversions by the total number of clicks, sessions or users, then multiply by one hundred. Which total you use changes the answer, so state the denominator whenever you report the figure.

What is a good conversion rate in India?

There is no honest single figure, because it depends on industry, price point, sales cycle, traffic source and what you count as a conversion. Segment your own data by branded versus non-branded traffic, mobile versus desktop, and new versus returning visitors instead.

Why is my conversion rate dropping?

The usual causes are a mismatch between what the ad promises and what the landing page says, a slow or broken mobile experience, broader match types bringing in unqualified traffic, or a change in the mix of brand and non-brand visitors. Check the promise gap first.

How can I improve my conversion rate?

Match the landing page headline to the ad in the same words, fix mobile page speed, remove unnecessary form fields, and offer the contact channel people actually use, which in India is often WhatsApp or a call button. Improving traffic quality also raises the rate without touching the page.
