Google Ads: The Complete Guide for India
How the auction actually works, which campaign type to start with, what it costs in rupees, and six deeper guides on the decisions that set your cost per lead.
Google Ads rewards relevance more than budget. Most accounts are set up as though the opposite were true.
This is the Google Ads section of our performance marketing guide. It covers how the platform works and which campaign type fits your situation — then hands you off to six guides that go deep on each decision.
How Google Ads works
Every time someone searches, Google runs an auction. It happens in milliseconds and you enter it automatically if your keywords match.
Two things decide where you land:
- Your bid — the most you are willing to pay for a click.
- Your Quality Score — Google's estimate of how relevant your ad, keyword and landing page are to the search.
Multiply them and you get Ad Rank. This is why an advertiser bidding ₹20 with a tight, relevant ad can outrank one bidding ₹40 with a generic one. Relevance is the cheapest lever in the account, and almost nobody pulls it first.
You then pay less than your maximum bid — just enough to beat the advertiser below you. That is why bidding aggressively on a well-built account often costs less per click than bidding cautiously on a sloppy one.
Which campaign type should you use?
Google offers seven campaign types. In practice, four matter for most Indian businesses.
| Campaign type | Use it when | Control you get | Start here? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search | People search for your category by name | High — you choose keywords, ads and bids | Yes, almost always |
| Shopping | You sell physical products online | Medium — the product feed does the targeting | Yes, if you are e-commerce |
| Performance Max | You already know what converts and want reach | Low — Google decides placement and audience | No. Add it later. |
| Demand Gen | You are building awareness, not capturing it | Medium | No. This is a Meta-style job. |

What Google Ads costs in India
There is no list price. You pay per click, and the click price is whatever the auction in your category says it is.
What you control is the ceiling. Set a daily budget and Google will spend roughly that per day, no more.
The number that actually matters is not cost per click — it is cost per lead, and then cost per customer. A ₹15 click that never converts is more expensive than a ₹90 click that does.
Work backwards instead of setting a round monthly figure:
- Start from a customer. What is one worth to you over a year?
- Apply your close rate. If one in five leads becomes a customer, you can afford a fifth of that value per lead.
- Apply your landing page conversion rate. If one in twenty clicks becomes a lead, that gives you your affordable cost per click.
- Multiply for data. You need 20–30 conversions before the numbers mean anything. That total, spread over four to six weeks, is your real starting budget.
On management fees, performance marketing in India typically runs ₹25,000 – ₹1,00,000 a month, separate from ad spend. Full detail in our performance marketing cost breakdown.
Before you spend a rupee
Three things have to be true, or everything downstream is guesswork.
- Conversion tracking is live and tested. Not "the tag is installed" — actually tested with a real submission.
- You agree on what a lead is. A form fill and a qualified enquiry are different things. Decide which one you are optimising for.
- Your landing page loads fast and matches the ad. A mismatch here quietly raises your cost per click through Quality Score.

Frequently asked questions
How does Google Ads work?
Google Ads runs an auction every time someone searches. You choose the keywords you want to appear for and the maximum you will pay. Google ranks the competing ads using your bid and your Quality Score, which measures how relevant your ad and landing page are. A more relevant ad can outrank a higher bid, which is why relevance is cheaper than money.
What does Google Ads cost in India?
There is no fixed price. You pay per click, and the click price is set by auction competition in your category. What you can control is the total: set a daily budget and Google will not exceed roughly that amount per day. Separately, agency management fees for performance marketing in India typically run between twenty-five thousand and one lakh rupees a month, excluding ad spend.
Which Google Ads campaign type should I start with?
Start with a Search campaign in almost every case. It targets people actively looking for what you sell, it gives you the clearest data on which keywords convert, and it is the easiest to diagnose when something goes wrong. Add Performance Max or Shopping later, once you know which search terms actually produce customers.
How much budget do I need to start Google Ads in India?
Enough to gather data, not enough to be comfortable. Work backwards: if a click costs thirty rupees and roughly one in twenty converts, a single lead costs about six hundred rupees. You need at least twenty to thirty conversions before the numbers mean anything, so budget for that volume over four to six weeks rather than setting a round monthly figure.
Why is my Google Ads cost per lead rising?
Usually one of four things: new competitors have entered your auction, your ads have gone stale and click-through rate has fallen, your match types have broadened and you are paying for irrelevant searches, or your landing page has slowed down. Check your search terms report first — wasted spend on irrelevant queries is the most common cause and the fastest to fix.
