What changed
The capability isn't new — only who gets it. Per TechCrunch's 19 May 2026 explainer →, information agents launched to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US first, pushing notifications and keeping each tracked topic in AI Mode history. That paywall came down this week.
Robby Stein, VP of Product for Search, posted on X: “Our Ultra and Pro subs have been using info monitoring capabilities in AI Mode in Search, and now we’re rolling it out to everyone globally.” Per Search Engine Roundtable's 28 September report →, Search then checks continuously across sites, forums, social posts and real-time data — Google's examples are new restaurants and pop-ups nearby, back-in-stock alerts and price drops.
Retail checks lean on Google's Shopping Graph of 60B+ products, and alerts land in the Google app. Search Engine Journal's coverage the same day → adds that Search will suggest monitoring tasks unprompted, and that Google hasn't said how often updates surface or which sources get prioritised. There's no Google blog post or help page yet, so this is reporting, not documentation.
What this means for marketers
A monitoring agent is a standing query you never see. Someone asks once in September and your stock, price or opening hours get re-checked for weeks — so stale feeds, unchanged GBP hours and a price that only exists inside an image are now quietly disqualifying.
The caveat: nobody can size this yet. Google hasn't said whether an alert names or links its source, so whether this becomes a referral surface or another zero-click one is genuinely open.
Our guide to agentic search covers making a site machine-checkable, and for local and retail brands most of the fix is unglamorous local SEO — accurate hours, live stock, prices in text.
