Digital Marketing Interview Questions: What the Interviewer Is Really Testing
22 questions agencies ask, what each one checks, and the difference between an answer that gets a polite nod and one that gets a second round.
Interviewers test the order you think in. Every answer in this guide is written from their side.
Most lists of digital marketing interview questions give you 50 textbook definitions. We sit on the other side of that table, and a definition almost never decides who gets hired.
The follow-up decides it. You say "ROAS is revenue divided by ad spend", and the interviewer asks, "So is a ROAS of 2 good?" That second question is where most freshers stall.
This page follows one hypothetical candidate. Riya is a final-year BMS student from a Mumbai college, interviewing for a digital marketing executive role at an agency in Andheri. She has run her college fest's Instagram and done one internship. If the channels themselves are still new to you, start with our digital marketing guide for beginners.
SEO-specific questions (crawling, indexing, links, audits) live in our SEO interview questions guide; this page covers the general and cross-channel round, with only two SEO-flavoured questions.

| # | Question | What they're testing | The answer that wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Explain digital marketing to a shop owner. | Can you drop the jargon? | "Getting found by people already looking, and reminding people who looked but didn't buy." |
| 2 | Walk me through the funnel for a brand you use. | Stages or just channels? | Name the brand, one touchpoint per stage, one metric per stage. |
| 3 | Organic or paid: when would you pick which? | Timelines | "Paid for demand this quarter, organic for demand next year." |
| 4 | Which Meta objective for a coaching institute's enquiries? | Current vocabulary | "Leads, not the retired Conversions objective." |
| 5 | What is Quality Score? What would you fix first? | Past the definition? | "Whichever of the three parts is rated Below average." |
| 6 | When would you use Target CPA? | Smart Bidding needs data | "Once conversions are steady, set near the CPA it already gets." |
| 7 | Why not edit a Meta ad set daily? | Learning phase | "Big edits reset learning. It needs about 50 results in a week." |
| 8 | Is a ROAS of 2 good? | Ads vs margin | "At 40% margin, break-even is 2.5, so 2 loses money." |
| 9 | Grow a café's Instagram with zero budget. | Planning under constraints | A 4-week plan: post count, one format bet, one local collab. |
| 10 | A reel got 50,000 views and no DMs. Success? | Vanity vs business metrics | "Reach worked, conversion didn't. I'd check the ask and where views came from." |
| 11 | How would you vet an influencer? | Scepticism | "Insights screenshots of reach and audience city, not follower count." |
| 12 | What changed from Universal Analytics to GA4? | Outdated study material | "UA stopped in July 2023. Bounce rate now means non-engaged sessions." |
| 13 | What is a key event in GA4? | Current terms | "What GA4 used to call a conversion." |
| 14 | Which attribution model does GA4 use? | Attribution is a choice | "Data-driven. First click and linear went in November 2023." |
| 15 | Track a lead from ad to sale. | End-to-end thinking | "UTMs, a GA4 key event, and the source saved in the CRM." |
| 16 | CPL doubled overnight. What first? | Diagnosis order | "Tracking, then account changes, then the auction." |
| 17 | Client wants to pause SEO after two months. | Honesty with clients | "Show leading indicators, agree a month-four checkpoint." |
| 18 | Client wants a reel to "go viral". | Expectation-setting | "Agree a measurable goal, like saves or enquiries. Reach is a bonus." |
| 19 | ₹30,000 a month for a new D2C brand. | Prioritisation | A split, a reason, and what you cut after 30 days. |
| 20 | Tell me about something that failed. | Ownership | One failure, the number that showed it, what you changed. |
| 21 | Why agency, not in-house? | Do you know the pace? | "More accounts means more problems seen in a year." |
| 22 | How do you keep up with platform changes? | Is it true? | Name one recent change and when it happened. |
Fundamentals: can you think in a funnel?
Freshers who answer "SEO, SMM, SEM, email" are listing apps. The interviewer wants to hear how a stranger becomes a customer.
Weak answer to Q2: "Top of funnel is awareness, middle is consideration, bottom is conversion."
Strong answer: "I saw this brand in a reel, searched its name two days later, left a cart, got a retargeting ad, and bought when a ₹200 coupon appeared. I'd watch reach at the top, branded searches and add-to-carts in the middle, cost per purchase at the bottom."
Same concept, but Riya has proved she watched a funnel work on herself. Our marketing funnel guide covers the stages if they're fuzzy.
For Q3, don't pick a side. Paid works within days and stops when spend stops; organic takes months and keeps working. "Depends how soon the client needs revenue" sounds like someone who has sat in a client meeting.
Paid media: is your vocabulary from this year?
Platforms rename things and old tutorials don't update. Mentioning a setting that no longer exists is the fastest way to lose a paid-media interviewer.
Q4, Meta objectives. Meta has six: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. The old Conversions and Messages objectives were folded into these, per Meta's note on the change. Say "I'd run a Conversions campaign" and you've told them you learned from a pre-2024 video.
Q6, bidding. Google lists four Smart Bidding strategies: Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize conversions and Maximize conversion value. The same help page notes Enhanced CPC stopped being available for Search and Display from the week of 31 March 2025. The strong answer adds a decision: "Maximize conversions until conversions are steady, then Target CPA near what it's already achieving. Set it far lower on day one and delivery drops."
Q5, Quality Score. Scored 1 to 10 from expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience, each rated Above average, Average or Below average (Google Ads Help). The weak answer stops at the definition. The strong one says which component to open first.
Q7, learning phase. Meta says an ad set usually exits learning after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit. If a client's budget buys 15 leads a week, optimising for purchases keeps it stuck. Say that and you've shown the maths.
Q8, ROAS. Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by gross margin. At 40% margin that's 2.5, so a ROAS of 2 loses money before anyone's salary is paid. For how agencies judge paid media on outcomes, read what performance marketing is.
Social: do you separate reach from results?
Weak answer to Q10: "50,000 views is great, the algorithm liked it."
Strong answer: "Reach did its job and the next step failed. I'd check whether the reel had a clear ask, whether the bio link works on mobile, and whether views came from the client's city. Then I'd reuse the hook with a stronger ask."
For Q9, Riya uses her fest page: four reels a week for three weeks, every sponsor tagged, one collab with a food stall, and her follower count before and after. Her own small numbers beat any textbook answer.
Analytics and measurement: GA4, not 2019
Universal Analytics standard properties stopped processing data on 1 July 2023. Talk about "bounce rate like in UA" and the interviewer knows your notes are three years old.
In GA4, an engaged session lasts longer than 10 seconds, has a key event, or has 2 or more page or screen views. Bounce rate is simply the share of sessions that were not engaged (Google's definition).
Conversions in GA4 are now called key events. And reporting offers data-driven attribution plus two last-click options, because first click, linear, time decay and position-based were removed in November 2023.
Strong answer to Q15: "UTM source, medium and campaign on every ad link. A GA4 key event on the thank-you page. The form passes the UTM source into the CRM, so when sales marks a lead 'won' three weeks later, we know which campaign earned it." Most candidates skip that last sentence, and agencies get judged on sales.
Scenario questions: what do you check first?
These are the main filter at an agency. There's no single right answer; the interviewer is listening for your order of operations.
Q16: CPL doubled overnight
Weak: "I'd change the creative and raise the budget."
Strong: "First, is it real? If leads dropped in the ad platform but not in the CRM, tracking broke, maybe a site update removed the pixel. Second, what changed in the account: a new ad, a budget edit that reset learning. Third, outside: a competitor sale, a holiday, a landing page that's down. Creative comes last." In our experience broken tracking is the usual culprit, and freshers forget it.
Q17: The client wants to pause SEO after two months
Weak: "SEO takes time, please be patient."
Strong: "I'd show what has moved: pages indexed, keywords now in positions 11 to 30, Search Console impressions. Leads from organic usually take three to six months. So I'd propose a month-four checkpoint with one agreed number, and if it hasn't moved, we discuss pausing." You defend the work and give the client an exit.
Q19: ₹30,000 a month for a new D2C brand
Give a split and a kill rule. Most of it to a Meta Sales campaign for first buyers, a small slice to Google branded search, nothing to SEO content yet. "After 30 days, if cost per purchase is above break-even, I cut the weakest ad set, not the channel." The exact split matters less than having one you can defend.
Behavioural questions: can we trust you with a client?
An agency is about to hand you a client's ad account and budget. These questions check whether that's safe.
Q20, failure. Riya boosted a fest post to "everyone in Mumbai, 18 to 35" and got likes from people who never bought a pass. "Next time: a 5 km radius around college, sending people to the ticket page." Short, specific, fixed.
Q22, keeping up. Don't list newsletters. Name one change and its date, like the ECPC removal in March 2025. One example proves the habit.
A 7-day prep plan before the interview
- Day 1: Read the job description twice. List every tool it names. Open the free Google Analytics demo account and find engagement rate and key events in the Google Merchandise Store property.
- Day 2: Study the agency. Read its case studies and look up two of its clients in the Meta Ad Library. Guess each ad's objective.
- Day 3: Learn this year's terms. Six Meta objectives, four Smart Bidding strategies, GA4 key events and its attribution options.
- Day 4: Build one mini plan. A one-page ₹10,000 monthly plan for a shop near your college: channel split, one KPI, a 30-day kill rule.
- Day 5: Write three stories. Something you measured, something that failed, a disagreement you handled. Under 90 seconds each, one number each.
- Day 6: Rehearse the scenarios. Record yourself on Q16 to Q19. Cut anything that sounds like a definition.
- Day 7: Prepare your questions, then rest. Ask "How many accounts would I handle?" and "What does a good first 90 days look like?"
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common digital marketing interview questions for freshers?
Explain the funnel using a brand you know, choose between organic and paid, name the right Meta objective or Google bid strategy for a simple case, define a GA4 metric, and describe one thing you ran yourself. Freshers are expected to use current terms and show one piece of work with a number attached.
How do I answer "tell me about a campaign" if I've never run one?
Use anything you measured: a college fest page, a friend's shop account, or a mock plan for a local business. Say what you did, what happened in numbers, and what you would change. A small honest example beats a large invented one, and two follow-up questions usually expose the difference.
Do I need Google Ads or Meta certifications to get hired?
In our view they help you get shortlisted but rarely decide the offer. Google's Ads certification is valid for one year, so expect to be asked what has changed since you took it. Treat it as proof you studied, then show you can apply it to a decision.
What do performance marketing interview questions focus on?
Numbers and decisions: ROAS and break-even ROAS, cost per lead, bid strategies such as Target CPA, Meta's learning phase, and tracking from ad click to CRM. The classic scenario is a sudden cost spike, where you check tracking first, then account changes, then outside factors.
How should I prepare for a digital marketing executive interview in a week?
Day one on the job description and the GA4 demo account, day two on the agency's clients in the Meta Ad Library, day three on current platform terms, day four on a one-page mini plan, day five on three short stories, day six rehearsing scenarios aloud, day seven on your own questions and rest.
