SEO Interview Questions: 23 Answers That Get You Hired in 2026

Most answer lists online were written for a Google that no longer exists. Here is what an SEO manager asks now, what each question tests, and the answer that gets the offer.

Quick answer: SEO interviews in 2026 test five things: how search works, technical basics like INP and indexing, content judgement, AI search (AI Overviews and AI Mode), and whether you can diagnose a traffic drop in Search Console. Strong answers name the exact report, threshold or policy. Stale answers about keyword density or FAQ rich results cost you the offer.
ANSWERS THAT WILL LOSE YOU THE JOB Stale answer on the left — 2026 answer on the right SAYS A 2019 CANDIDATE SAYS THE ONE WHO GETS HIRED Keyword density Search intent and topical coverage First Input Delay (FID) INP — FID was replaced in March 2024 “Add FAQ schema for rich results” FAQ rich results were dropped in May 2026 “We rank #1” Clicks and CTR in Search Console Interviewers in 2026 ask about AI Overviews, INP and Search Console's limits. Textbook answers from older guides are the fastest way to show you learned SEO from a listicle.

Four answers that sound fine in a textbook and cost candidates the job in 2026.

We hire SEO people. One follow-up separates readers from doers: "Where would you check that?"

Take Rohan, a hypothetical SEO executive with one year at a small Thane agency, interviewing at a Mumbai agency. He knows the definitions. Naming the report, threshold and Google doc behind each answer is what gets him hired. If a term below is new to you, the SEO guide covers the foundations first.

This page is SEO only. For paid media, social and general marketing rounds, use our digital marketing interview questions.

Fundamentals: do you understand how Google works?

FreshersEvery round

1. What are crawling, indexing and ranking?

Testing: whether you know that a page can fail at any of three separate stages.

Crawling is Googlebot fetching the URL, indexing is Google storing it, ranking is choosing what to show. The detail that impresses: crawled doesn't mean indexed, which is why the Page indexing report has a status called "Crawled - currently not indexed".

2. What is search intent, and how do you check it?

Testing: whether you look at the SERP before writing.

Intent is what the searcher wants to do: learn, compare, buy or go somewhere. You check it by reading what Google already ranks. If the top ten for "CRM software" are comparison lists, a product page will struggle. Our search intent guide has the classification we use.

3. Is E-E-A-T a ranking factor?

Testing: whether you repeat SEO folklore or read primary sources.

No. Google's helpful content guidance says E-E-A-T "itself isn't a specific ranking factor", and that of the four parts, trust matters most.

Technical SEO interview questions

1–4 yearsMost-failed round

4. What are the Core Web Vitals and their thresholds?

Testing: whether your knowledge stopped in 2023.

LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, CLS under 0.1, per Google's Core Web Vitals page. INP replaced FID on 12 March 2024. The extra detail: web.dev measures INP at the 75th percentile of real page loads, with 200–500 ms as "needs improvement" and over 500 ms as poor.

5. Will fixing Core Web Vitals push a page to the top?

Testing: priorities.

Not on its own. Google's page experience doc says Search "always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par". Fix INP because users feel it, not as a ranking lever.

6. How do you optimise crawl budget?

Testing: whether you know when a problem is not your problem.

The best answer starts with "usually you don't". Google's crawl budget guide is written for sites with 1 million+ pages, or 10,000+ pages changing daily. For a 400-page Mumbai builder site, it is a non-issue.

7. What does "Duplicate without user-selected canonical" mean?

Testing: whether you have opened the Page indexing report.

Google found duplicates with no declared canonical, picked one itself, and won't serve the other. Fix it with rel="canonical" on the version you want and internal links pointing to it. Our technical SEO guide covers canonicals and the rest of this round.

8. A page is "Discovered - currently not indexed". What now?

Testing: diagnosis over panic.

Google found the URL but hasn't crawled it; Search Console Help says Google typically rescheduled because crawling was expected to overload the site. Check server response times in Crawl Stats and internal links to the page. Hitting "Request indexing" fifty times is not a plan.

Content and on-page questions

9. What keyword density do you target?

Testing: this is a trap question.

None. You write for intent and cover the subtopics. Google's spam policies list "repeating the same words or phrases so often that it sounds unnatural" as keyword stuffing.

10. What happened to the Helpful Content Update?

Testing: whether you follow Google's own documentation.

It's gone as a separate system. The ranking systems guide lists it under retired systems: it became part of the core ranking systems in March 2024.

11. Can you use AI to write content?

Testing: judgement, not ideology.

Yes, if a person adds first-hand experience, data and editing. Google's scaled content abuse policy targets pages made "for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings", "no matter how it's created".

Local SEO questions

12. What decides Google Maps rankings?

Testing: whether you can quote the source instead of a tool vendor.

Google Business Profile Help names three: relevance, distance and prominence. You can't move distance, so the work is categories, complete details and reviews.

13. A client asks if paying Google will lift their Maps rank. Answer?

Testing: honesty with clients.

No. The same help page says "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." Saying that calmly shows you can handle a client.

AI search interview questions

New in 2026Asked everywhere

14. How do you get a page into AI Overviews or AI Mode?

Testing: whether you've been sold GEO snake oil.

Google's AI features doc says there are "no additional requirements" and no special optimisation. Its May 2026 AI optimisation guide goes further: optimising for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO".

15. Should we add llms.txt, chunk our content or add special schema?

Testing: whether you check claims.

The same guide says no AI text files are needed, there's "no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces", and no special schema. It asks for "non-commodity content" instead.

16. How do you measure AI Overview visibility?

Testing: whether you know this year's tooling.

Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites worldwide by 31 August 2026. It shows impressions only, by page, country, device and date: no clicks, no queries. The same data also sits in the Performance report's Web search type.

17. A publisher wants out of AI Overviews but not out of Search. How?

Testing: precise controls.

Search Console has a Search generative AI control under Settings. Exclude removes the site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's AI features, and Google says it "isn't used as a ranking or inclusion signal" for the rest of Search. Google-Extended only limits model training.

Measurement and diagnosis questions

18. What can't Search Console tell you?

Testing: whether you trust data blindly.

Per Search Console Help: tables show at most 1,000 rows, rare and sensitive queries are filtered for privacy, and data usually lands two to three days late. So query totals won't match click totals. Our Search Console guide goes through each report.

19. Traffic fell 30%. Penalty, algorithm update or tracking?

Testing: the single most important skill in the job.

Work in order. One: if Search Console clicks are flat and GA4 fell, it's tracking. Two: open Manual actions and Security issues; Google notifies manual actions there. Three: match the drop date to the Search Status Dashboard. Four: check Google Trends for seasonality, as Google's traffic-drop guide recommends alongside a 16-month view.

20. Impressions are steady, clicks are down. What's going on?

Testing: reading two metrics together.

Rankings held; CTR fell. Suspect a new AI Overview above you, a rewritten title or a stronger competitor snippet. Search the query from India before touching the page.

Scenario and practical questions

21. First week on a new client. What do you do?

Testing: order of operations.

Get Search Console and GA4 access, confirm tracking, read the Page indexing report, list the top 20 pages by clicks, and ask which pages make money. Rohan adds: "Nothing gets recommended before I've seen 16 months of data."

22. "Open Search Console and find a page that lost clicks."

Testing: whether you've used the tool, live.

Performance, Search results. Date, Compare, last 3 months against the previous period. Pages tab, sort by the clicks difference. Click the worst page, switch to Queries to see which searches it lost, and check whether position or CTR moved. Narrate as you click; silence reads as guessing.

23. What would you not do on this site?

Testing: whether you can say no.

Pick something real: no disavow file without a manual action, no mass AI pages. Interviewers remember candidates who push back with a reason.

The 30-minute live audit: how to structure it

Many agencies, ours included, hand candidates a live URL and a timer. Nobody expects a full audit; we watch what you check first. Here is the order we'd want from Rohan.

  1. Minutes 0–3: ask the brief. Which query is this page meant to rank for, which market, which device?
  2. Minutes 3–8: can Google index it? Status code, robots meta, canonical, robots.txt. If you have access, URL Inspection. A noindex found here outranks everything else you'll say.
  3. Minutes 8–13: does it match intent? Search the target query in incognito from India. Note the page types ranking, any AI Overview and the local pack. A blog post chasing a product-page SERP is finding one.
  4. Minutes 13–18: on-page. Title, H1, the opening answer, subtopics the top three cover that this page misses, and internal links pointing in.
  5. Minutes 18–23: field performance. PageSpeed Insights, and read the field data (real Chrome users) before the lab score. Quote INP, LCP and CLS against their thresholds.
  6. Minutes 23–27: structured data. Rich Results Test. If you find FAQPage markup, say it earns no rich result since May 2026 and explain what you'd keep or drop.
  7. Minutes 27–30: prioritise. Three fixes, ranked by impact and effort, plus what you'd check with Search Console access.

Rohan wins this round by saying "this matters most, here's why" at minute 28.

Once you have an offer, check what the role should pay in our digital marketing salary guide for India before you negotiate.

Key takeaways: 2026 interviewers reward sources over definitions. Learn INP, the Page indexing statuses, the Generative AI performance report and the four-step traffic-drop diagnosis. Drop keyword density, meta keywords, FID and FAQ rich results from your vocabulary.

Frequently asked questions

What SEO interview questions are asked to freshers?

Crawling versus indexing versus ranking, search intent, titles and headings, and what Search Console does. Expect one trap, usually ideal keyword density. The right answer: no target exists, and unnatural repetition is keyword stuffing under Google's spam policies.

What technical SEO questions come up for SEO executives?

Core Web Vitals and their thresholds (LCP 2.5 s, INP 200 ms, CLS 0.1), the Page indexing report statuses such as "Discovered - currently not indexed", canonical tags, robots.txt versus noindex, and when crawl budget matters. With experience, expect "where would you check that?"

Do I need to know coding for an SEO interview?

Not for most SEO executive roles. You should read page source, find the title, robots meta and canonical, and understand how JavaScript rendering affects indexing. Coding is a bonus for technical roles.

How do I prepare for an SEO interview with no client work?

Run a small site, connect Search Console, and bring screenshots of the Performance report and one fix you made. Practise a 30-minute audit on a real page and walk through it step by step.

Are AI Overviews questions really asked in SEO interviews now?

At client-facing agencies, yes. Know that Google says there are no extra requirements to appear, that llms.txt and special schema are not needed, and that Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode but not clicks.
