The Local SEO Checklist for Indian Businesses
Twenty-eight steps, in the order that actually moves the map pack — not the order that is easiest to write about.
Most local SEO advice is a list of everything, in no particular order.
Order is the whole game. Fixing citations before your profile is complete is wasted work, because you will be pushing out inconsistent information at scale.
This checklist runs in the sequence that actually works. It sits inside our SEO guide, and each block links to the post that covers it properly.
Block 1 · Google Business Profile (do this first)
Nothing else in local SEO matters until this is right. It is the single strongest signal you control.
- Claim and verify the profile. Unverified profiles rank poorly and can be edited by strangers.
- Set the primary category precisely. This is the highest-leverage field on the profile. "Dental clinic" and "Dentist" are different categories with different competition.
- Add secondary categories — but only ones you genuinely serve. Padding dilutes relevance.
- Write the business name exactly as it appears on your signage. Keyword-stuffing the name is the most common cause of suspension in India.
- Complete every field. Hours, attributes, services, products, opening date. Empty fields are ranking left on the table.
- Add real photos, geotagged, monthly. Interior, exterior, team, work. Stock images are obvious and do nothing.
- Set service areas honestly if you travel to customers. Claiming all of Maharashtra when you serve three suburbs weakens every one of them.
- Turn on messaging only if someone will answer it. Slow replies are visible and count against you.

Block 2 · NAP and citations
NAP is name, address, phone. Consistency across the web is what tells Google your business is real and singular.
- Write your NAP once, exactly, and keep it in a document. Every listing copies from that document, not from memory.
- Decide the address format and never vary it. "Andheri East" and "Andheri (E)" read as two things to a machine.
- Use one local phone number consistently. A different number on each listing is the fastest way to look like several businesses.
- Claim the core Indian directories — Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART where relevant to your category, plus Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
- Audit for duplicates. Old listings from a previous address or owner actively compete with you.
- Fix inconsistencies at the source rather than adding a new correct listing on top of a wrong one.
Deeper: local citations and NAP consistency.
Block 3 · Reviews
- Build a repeatable ask. A link sent by WhatsApp within a day of service beats any poster on a wall.
- Never buy reviews. Detection has improved, and removal takes the legitimate ones with it.
- Reply to every review, including the good ones. Response rate is visible to customers and to Google.
- Answer negative reviews calmly and factually. The reply is written for the next reader, not for the reviewer.
- Aim for steady flow, not bursts. Forty reviews in one week after eighteen months of silence looks exactly like what it is.
Deeper: how to get more Google reviews.
Block 4 · On-page local signals
- Put NAP in the site footer as text, not inside an image.
- Build a real location page per genuine location. One page per office, with distinct content. Thin duplicated city pages are worse than none.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data matching your NAP exactly.
- Embed a Google map on the contact or location page.
- Write titles the way people search locally — service plus city, in that order.
- Make the phone number tappable on mobile. Most local search in India is mobile and impatient.
- Fix mobile page speed. It is a ranking input and a conversion input at the same time.
Block 5 · Tracking, and knowing whether it worked
- Check profile insights monthly — searches, calls, direction requests. Direction requests are the closest thing local SEO has to intent.
- Track calls separately from form fills. In most Indian local categories the phone is the primary channel and it is invisible in web analytics.
- Rank-check from the right place. Local results vary by the searcher's location, so checking from your office tells you very little.
- Watch for suspension notices and profile edits by "the public". Both are common and both are silent.
If you are not showing up at all
Work through the blocks in order — but if the profile is verified and complete and you are still invisible, the cause is usually one of four things: the primary category is wrong, the address falls outside the searcher's radius, there are duplicate listings competing, or the profile is suspended without you noticing.
We cover the diagnosis in not showing up on Google Maps, and the ranking mechanics in how to rank in Google Maps.

Frequently asked questions
What is a local SEO checklist?
It is the ordered set of tasks that get a business into Google's map pack and local results. The work splits into five blocks: your Google Business Profile, citations and NAP consistency, reviews, on-page local signals, and tracking. The order matters as much as the tasks.
What is the most important local SEO ranking factor?
Google does not publish weightings, so anyone quoting exact percentages is guessing. In practice the primary category on your Google Business Profile is the highest-leverage single field you control, followed by NAP consistency and a steady flow of genuine reviews.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Profile and category fixes can show movement within weeks because they change how Google classifies you. Citation cleanup and review building compound over three to six months. Anyone promising map pack rankings in days is describing something that does not happen.
Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?
The four usual causes are a wrong primary category, an address outside the radius the searcher is being served from, duplicate listings competing with each other, and a suspension you have not noticed. Check suspension status first, because it makes everything else irrelevant.
Do I need a separate page for every city I serve?
Only for cities where you have a genuine presence or genuinely deliver. One real location page with distinct content beats six thin city pages, which look manufactured to both Google and customers and drag down the locations you actually serve.
