How to List Your Business on Google (India, 2026)

Create it, verify it, and get past the four mistakes that get Indian listings suspended before they ever show up.

Quick answer: Listing your business on Google means creating a Google Business Profile at google.com/business, entering your real business name, category and address, and then completing verification — usually by phone, email, video or postcard. It is free, it takes about fifteen minutes to submit, and the listing only goes live once verification is complete.

This is the entry point to local search. Without a verified profile you cannot appear in the map results at all, no matter how good your website is.

Here is the whole process, and then the mistakes that cause most of the trouble.

Before you start: check whether a listing already exists

Do this first. It saves the most common mess.

Google creates business listings automatically from other data sources, so there may already be an unclaimed profile with your name on it. Search your business name plus your city in Google Maps.

  • If a profile appears and says "Claim this business" — claim it. Do not create a new one.
  • If a profile appears and someone else has claimed it — request access through the profile. Google will contact the current owner.
  • If nothing appears — you are creating from scratch. Continue below.
Why this matters: a duplicate listing splits your reviews, photos and history across two profiles. Google usually resolves it by removing one — and it does not always remove the one you would choose.

The six steps to create the listing

  1. Go to google.com/business and sign in. Use a Google account that belongs to the business and that will outlive whoever set it up. Not a personal Gmail belonging to an intern.
  2. Enter your business name exactly as it appears in the real world. On your signage, your invoices, your registration. No city names, no keywords, no taglines. "Sharma Dental Clinic", not "Sharma Dental Clinic — Best Dentist in Andheri".
  3. Choose your primary category carefully. This is the single most consequential field on the profile. Pick the one that describes what you fundamentally are, not everything you offer. You can add secondary categories afterwards.
  4. Set the address or service area. If customers come to you, enter the address exactly as India Post would write it. If you travel to customers, choose the service-area option and list the areas you genuinely cover.
  5. Add your phone number and website. Use a number that is answered during your stated hours. This number needs to match what is on your website and your other listings.
  6. Submit and choose a verification method. Google offers different options depending on your category and location — see the next section.

Submission takes about fifteen minutes. Verification is the part with the waiting.

Verification, and how long each method takes

You do not get to pick freely — Google offers the methods it considers appropriate for your business type and country. Whatever you are offered, take the fastest one available.

MethodTypical waitWatch out for
PhoneInstant to same dayThe number must be able to receive the call or SMS right then
EmailUsually instantOnly offered to some categories
Video recordingA few days to reviewYou will need to show signage, equipment and proof you manage the place
Live video callScheduledHave your documents and premises ready before you join
PostcardTwo weeks or more in IndiaSlowest, and the code expires — request a resend if it does not arrive

While you are waiting, do not create a second listing. It is the natural instinct and it is the wrong one. You will end up with a duplicate and a longer wait.

What to fill in once you are verified

The listing is live. Now complete it, because a half-finished profile converts badly even when it appears.

  • Hours, including special hours for Indian public holidays. Wrong hours generate genuinely angry reviews.
  • Services or products, written the way customers describe them rather than the way you do internally.
  • Photos — exterior so people can find the door, interior so they know what to expect, and your team.
  • A business description that says what you do and who for, in plain language.
  • Attributes relevant to your category: wheelchair access, parking, payment methods, languages spoken.

That completes the setup. What comes next — getting the profile to actually rank — is a different job, covered in our Google Business Profile optimisation guide and how to rank in Google Maps.

The four mistakes that cause most Indian suspensions

  1. Keywords in the business name. Adding "Best", "Cheap" or a city to your name is against Google's guidelines and is the most frequently reported listing in India. Competitors report it. Google acts on it.
  2. An address you do not operate from. A virtual office, a friend's shop, a residential address for a business that has no presence there. This gets listings suspended, and suspensions are painful to reverse.
  3. Inconsistent name, address and phone number. If your website, your Justdial entry and your profile disagree about your address, Google trusts all of them less. Our guide to citations and NAP consistency covers how to clean this up.
  4. Buying reviews. Beyond being against policy, review patterns are exactly the thing detection systems are good at. The honest route is in how to get more Google reviews.
If your listing disappears later, that is a different problem with different causes — we cover it in why your business is not showing on Google Maps.

Where to go from here

Once verified, the listing is eligible to appear. Eligible is not the same as visible.

Local rankings depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and you are competing with every other verified business nearby. The practical next steps are in our local SEO checklist, and if you are a smaller business working out where to spend limited time, local SEO for small business is the more realistic starting point.

Key takeaways: Check for an existing listing before creating one, because duplicates cost you reviews. Use your real-world name with no keywords, pick the primary category deliberately, and take the fastest verification method Google offers you. The listing is free — anyone charging you a Google registration fee is not Google.

Frequently asked questions

Is listing a business on Google free?

Yes. Creating and verifying a Google Business Profile costs nothing, and Google does not charge for the listing, the map pin or the profile features. Anyone asking you to pay Google a fee to register your business is not Google. You may choose to pay someone to manage the profile for you, but that is an agency fee, not a Google fee.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

It depends entirely on the method. Phone and email verification, when offered, are usually instant or same day. Video verification typically takes a few days to review. Postcard verification is the slow one and can take two weeks or more to arrive in India, and longer if your address is hard for the post to find. Do not create a second listing while waiting.

Can I list my business on Google without a physical address?

Yes, if you serve customers at their location rather than yours. Set the profile up as a service-area business, give your real address during verification, and then hide it from public display. What you cannot do is invent an address or use a virtual office you do not actually operate from. That is the most common reason Indian listings get suspended.

What do I do if a listing for my business already exists?

Claim it rather than creating a new one. Google generates listings automatically from other sources, so an unclaimed profile for your business may already be live. Search for your business name and address, and if a profile appears, use the claim option on it. Creating a duplicate splits your reviews and photos across two listings and usually ends with one being removed.

Does creating a listing mean I will show up in Google Maps searches?

It makes you eligible, not visible. A verified profile is the entry requirement for local results, but where you appear depends on relevance, distance and prominence, and you are competing with every other verified business in your area. Setting the listing up correctly is step one. Ranking in the map pack is a separate piece of work.

Listed but invisible?

Getting found is the harder half

Verification makes you eligible. Relevance, proximity and prominence decide whether anyone sees you.
